What’s In A 1000 Names!

~ musings on Sahasranamam (LalithA & VishNu)

A recent share by a family member on conducting ‘VishNu SahasranhAmam PArAyaNam‘ session at their home triggered an interesting discussion thread. Sharing it here, which hopefully offers some enchanting insights into two of the most popular Sahasranhamam sthothrams, i.e. LalithA SahasranhAmam (1000 sacred names of DEvi LalithA ParamEswari) and VishNu SahasrahAmam (1000 sacred names of Lord MahAVishNu).
‘Vishnu SahasranhAmam’ (விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாமம் ~ 1000 sacred names of Lord MahAVishNu) chanting for Swamy was initiated by his Upa Guru Sohamanandaji, during the ChAr DhAm yAtrA (YamunOtri-GangOtri-KEdArnAth-BadhrinAth). 👣

A daily practice at many Vaishnavite households (along with the ubiquitous SuprabhAtham), Vishnnu SahasranhAmam chanting continues to happen at SwamyHome, which, per religious / social norms (and spiritual practices, needless to say) is a Shaivite household (with the help of ‘பெரிய எழுத்து’ ~ bold letters edition by Giri Trading Agency, of course) every Saturday, after the daily chanting for Lord SkandhaGurunhAthan (Swamy’s Kuladheivam [குலதெய்வம்] ~ worshipped in the form of VEl [வேல்]). 😌 On Fridays, it’s the turn of Sri LalithA Sahasranhamam (ஸ்ரீ லலிதா சஹஸ்ரநாமம்), needless to say 🔥🙏

Incidentally, ‘ஸ்ரீ லலிதா சஹஸ்ரநாமம்’ (Sri LalithA SahasranhAmam) is said to have been chanted by Lord Hayagreevar (ஹயக்ரீவர் ~ Horse-faced Lord), who is an amsam or manifestation of Lord VishNu (not an avatAr, like Sri RAmA or Sri KrishNA). So it’s essentially a sthOthram by the elder brother praising younger sister (who was given away in marriage to Adiyogi ShivA)🙌, which is practically unheard of, but truly awesome. For those on the path of ShAktham (சாக்தம் [அ] சக்தி வழிபாடு [அ] தேவி உபாசனை ~ worship of the supreme reality as Shakthi, i.e. Mother or DEvi), it’s the child praising its mother, as all three primary Gods (and their consorts as well) are said to be created by the Divine Mother, for the sake of creation, with specific responsibilities, viz. Creation (Lord BrahmA), Sustenance (Lord MahAVishNu) and Transformation / Salvation (Lord ShivA).

The place where Lord Hayagreevar is believed to have chanted LalithA Sahasranhamam is enroute to Mount KailAsh, along the trekking path from the base camp. 👣

Swamy’s Upa Guru Sohamanandaji is a DEvi upAsakar (the form worshipped by him is DEvi ChinnaMasthA ~ தேவி சின்னமஸ்தா), so he has naturally started chanting LalithA Sahasranhamam during the trek to KailAsh (he was part of the same Isha SacredWalks group as Swamy, but hasn’t yet become Swamy’s Upa Guru, then), while crossing a particular spot. A Buddhist Monk who was going the other way stopped for a moment and told him “Horse face God chanted it here,” and pointed to some form of identification at that spot. 🙌 ShambhO 🙏

However, the origin of LalithA Sahasranhamam is said to be DEvi herself 🔥, since it’s practically impossible for any other being in creation to express Adi ParAshakthi’s (ஆதி பராசக்தி) magnificence in full🙏. With the possible exception of her other half, of course! 😂

Naturally, there’s an enchanting sthOthram on DEvi by none other than Lord ShivA himself, which is known as ‘Soundharyalahari’ (சௌந்தர்யலஹரி), which is essentially a husband’s praise of the enchanting beauty and virtues of his wife, with intimate details about her physique, mind, nature, etc.

The version of Soundharyalahari sthOthram that we’ve now is said to be an abridged edition, offered to us by Jagadguru Adi ShankarAchArya ✍

According to mythical lore, when the Jagadguru had the privilege of listening to the entire hymn (while having the darshan of அம்மையப்பன், obviously), he wanted to naturally share it with humanity. But when he was leaving KailAsh with the entire hymn (in which form is unknown, but that’s just a trivial detail), NandhikEswara (நந்திகேஸ்வரர்) apparently intercepted him and removed a whole bunch of verses that are considered too privy to be shared with anyone else. That makes Lord Nandhi the first censor board official! 😂🙏🙌
Here’s an(other) enchanting tale about VishNu Sahasranamam…

A lot of devotees know that VishNu Sahasranamam was chanted by Bheeshma PithAmah (பீஷ்ம பிதாமஹர்) while waiting to leave his body at an auspicious time (there’s a tale related to the actual event – of his inability to leave, despite his boon – which is covered well in the insightful Ratha Sapthami video by ஆலயம் செல்வீர் ~ Aalayam Selveer YouTube channel).
But only after the chanting was completed by Bheeshmar, everyone present there realised the significance of the hymn and regretted that no one recorded it for posterity. So, Lord KrishNa himself offered them the solution.
The Lord, the eighth avatAr (incarnation) of MahAVishNu, pointed out that since SahAdEvA (or NakulA, not sure which one, but most likely the former, who is an expert in many ShAstrAs, including Astrology, which alludes to him being the chosen one) is the one wearing a Spatikha mAla (ஸ்படிக மணிமாலை), he should be able to recall the hymn, in its entirety.

Spatikha apparently has memory that enables it to absorb nhAdha (sound / vibrations), which is the insight one can gain from this. 😇 Our limited knowledge is only about the cooling property of the gem. That’s how we ended up getting the enchanting VishNu Sahasranamam sthOthram. 🙏
So, is it any surprise that most (all!) those who do Vedic chanting and chanting of hymns regularly wear Spatikha mAla, in addition to RudrAksha mAla (whose purpose is vastly different)! 🤔🤘

The Idea of Belief!

Even after the greatest loss in life, would one still believe in God?

That was one of those rare profound questions (a lot of questions belong to the usual BAUHumbug “I’ll ask because I can” type) asked to Swamy on Quora. Here’s his response!

This is the fundamental conundrum in any kind of belief system, of which the most prominent is religion, which is built on the foundation known as God. Without the foundation, there can’t be a strong building, hence pretty much all Religions are heavily invested in the grand idea of an omnipotent and omnipresent entity called God. Of course, each of them have their own definition of God and are absolutely certain that only their version of God is authentic and the rest are heretic!

If one believes in God (or the source of creation – for those who are uncomfortable with the very idea of an almighty supreme being that’s Creator / Preserver / Transformer all rolled into one), faith in the divine has to be absolute, no matter what. Otherwise, it’s just a selective-belief, which is very subjective, varying from one situation to another, rooted in the binary existence (good/bad, right/wrong, superior/inferior, beaty/ugly, rich/poor, etc) of humans.

If a believer is like “I’ll believe when things work out well for me and I’ll be doubtful when things don’t work out the way I expected,” then there is really no need for any kind of belief at all. Which, in a tangential way, is actually liberating, because,

In the absence of belief, one will be true to oneself, holding oneself accountable for one’s own actions, instead of passing the buck to God.

Oh well, now we’ve inadvertently started treading on the spiritual path. And here’s what Spirituality (not to be confused with Religion) says about the Source of Creation aka Parabrahmam aka God/dess.

The source of creation is present in every single piece of creation, i.e. all beings in existence – including, but not limited to, humans. All creations are nothing but manifestations or manifest forms of the singular unmanifest energy. So, Creation / birth and Cremation / death are nothing but transformation of the same energy into different forms (Shout out to scientists – “you’re not in conflict with seekers”). And this manifestation happens incessantly, forever, until it ceases for good (known as MahAPraLayA aka Armageddon), and then starts all over again (Rudra’s roar aka the Big Bang). Those on the Spiritual path believe (pun intended) we’re in the 84th such cycle of creation, while those on the survival road are still trying hard to believe this single big bang itself!

In the grand – beyond the puny limited imagination of humans – scale of cosmos, creation or cremation of a single piece of creation, however famous or great that being may’ve been, is really an insignificant happening.

A flower bud on a plant blossoms, whithers and falls – without any complaints about the creator’s partiality.

A lion gets delivered in the forest, learns to walk and hunt, grows, hunts to feed, creates and nurtures cubs, ages and dies – without ever blaming a higher power for any of that.

A river originates from the mountain glacier, flows merrily with pure water down to the plains, gets used and abused by humans, and empties itself into the ocean – not for a moment pondering if its pure mountain joy or polluted plains suffering is because of God.

Every single piece of creation – animals, birds, critters, flora, fauna, land, mountain, ocean, valley, river, sun, moon, planets, galaxies, etc. etc. etc… – goes on, through the cycle of creation, many times over, without a belief system and without an iota of doubt, by experiencing “Life, the way it is!

Only a single species, in this vast still-expanding universe, known as humans, endowed with the rare ability to observe, contemplate and conclude, is simultaneously too proud of the superiority of its kind (as it wields destructive power over everything else on this – so far only inhabitable planet) and too silly to blame God for its woes, instead of marvelling at the intricate and complex process of colourful Life, happening all around, all the time and remaining grateful to be a part of this grand Creation.

In that context, loss in life is an independent event in an individual being’s insignificant existence. It’s just another event, in the self-preservation focused survival. This too shall pass. Irrespective of whether an individual recovers from grief soon or not, without waiting for that individual to renew her/his faith in the divine or not, ‘Life, the way it is,’ simply goes on… and on… and on… In other words, the dance of the divine (Dance of Shiva, if you will) keeps happening, without depending on any individual creation’s tune, while remaining in sync with all kinds of tunes in existence.

The Creator has everything to do with all of Creation, but nothing to do with any one creation’s self-created beliefs!

Informed Ignorance!

A few days ago

, one of the SwamyPals (the motley group of friends and acquaintances from the academic and corporate phase of this lifetime who are still connected to Swamy, for whatever strange inexplicable reason) wrote to Swamy thus…
“Recently i wanted to exlore on vel …as i read it can delete karma… wanted to know how they do vel prayer and what is the significance in case you know.”
Such sudden desire or interest to explore some unknown well-known is common in humans, because there’s no dearth of information on anything and everything (that’s the well-known part), which makes one want to know more about… well, pretty much anything and everything (the unknown part).
While “Informed Ignorance” isn’t harmful (there are many other horrible afflictions taunting humans at every blind turn on the survival expressway) to anyone – including the info-seeker – as long as it remains at information level (“I read / see / hear, therefore I am“), initiating action related to some unknown, solely based on information, as opposed to knowledge or wisdom, will most certainly be harmful, particularly for the person who performs the action, whatever it is. So, let’s look at how the widespread phenomenon of “Informed Ignorance” can be an obstacle on the path (to realise the Truth).

Disclaimer: Though Swamy is an actual practitioner of the processes mentioned in this post, he strongly advises you, the dear reader, against using any information to initiate actions on your own. All the processes mentioned below have to be initiated formally by someone with prior experience, i.e. a practitioner or sadhaka, who is qualified to initiate others.

In this ancient culture, many different ways of connecting with the divine, with the objective of dissolving the individual identity and merging with the omnipresent entity / energy known as NirghuNa ParaBrahmam (aka Mukti ~ ultimate liberation from the repetitive birth-death cycle), were created. One of them is using the combination of 3 things known as Yantra, Tantra and Mantra.
YantrA is a device or machine. It has a specific form (depending on the divine form that it is associated with) and purpose (both material and spiritual). YantrA is physical and can be two (picture) or three dimensional (device). In its most simplified form, even the kOlam drawn in front of the home or inside the puja room can be a yantrA.
Tantra is the process or method to use the Yantra or device. It’s typically a ritual with very specific guidelines that need to be adhered to, in order for the process to be effective, i.e. yield the expected outcome. Tantra process can be very elaborate (including homam or havan, etc) or simple, but the guidelines cannot be tailored or modified by the user.
Mantra is the Chant used for the Tantra (process) to access the Yantra (device). It could be a single sound (Bija like Lum, Hrim, etc) or a Chant specific to the divine form (AUM Namah ShivAya for Lord ShivA) or a slOkha (like the GAyathri mantra) or even a sTothram (like VEl mARal or LalithA Thrishadi).
The combination of all three is used as a sAdhanA (spiritual process) to attain self-realisation and eventually liberation. It can also be used to attain specific siddhis (mystical powers) or benefits on the material plane of existence but that’s like misusing or grossly under-utilising a powerful device – like driving a Lamborghini Urus in the peak hour OMR traffic in Chennai (or anytime in Bengaluru)!

YantAs are of different forms and shapes, depending on the deity or divine forms that it is used to access. For Lord ShivA, it’s usually a Linga. For DEvi Shakthi, it’s the Sri ChakrA and MEru (3D form of Sri ChakrA) or something like the Linga Bhairavi YantrA that’s in SwamyHome. For Lord MahAVishNu, it’s a sALagrAmam. For Lord Murugan, it’s the mighty Vel (lance / spear). There are many others like this such as PanchAyudha (five different stones representing five aspects / forms of the divine), each with its own associated processes and chants.
Having a YantrA at home and accessing it (using it for any purpose – material or spiritual) requires formal initiation from either a Realised Master (Guru) or a sAdhakA (practitioner) who has attained mastery over the process and is qualified to instruct others. This is extremely important for the actual functioning of the device to yield specific outcomes. Though it’s very tempting (and obviously easy), one shouldn’t get any yantrA and start using it by oneself, as the yantrA is not an electric or electronic device that comes with DIY instructions.

At SwamyHome, we’ve a Linga Bhairavi YantrA, which was received from Swamy’s Master Sadhguru, an accomplished Yogi, Mystic and visionary founder of Isha Yoga. There is a daily process (TantrA) that needs to be done by both Mr and Mrs Swamy (this yantrA is usually received by partners – life or business; there’s also a slightly larger form known as Avigna yantrA, for larger spaces and organisations). The Chant (MantrA) is about 11 minutes long (duration of the process) and done in Sadhguru’s voice itself, so that it sounds exactly as it is supposed to be (chanting has to be always precise – both what and how are critical – that’s why those who Chant the vEdAs undergo rigorous practice for many years).
The sanctity of the space where the Linga Bhairavi YantrA is kept has to be maintained like a temple – always kept clean, with a ghee or oil lamp lit and no eating, drinking or sleeping is to be done for 10 sq ft around it. There are also specific guidelines for days such as PourNami (full moon) & GrahaNam (eclipse) and if both the practitioners are away for more than 3 days. In a way, our home is a temple now with DEvi established and very much present in the GarbhagrihA (the puja room). Since we know that by experience, we ensure that it’s maintained that way as well, to the best of our abilities (cleanliness, alankAram – decoration, arpaNam – offering, Aarti – lighting camphor).

As our home is a consecrated space now, we’re also expected to let as many people experience Devi’s Grace by inviting them to our home and let them participate by chanting slokhAs, performing Aarti or simply sit and get soaked in her fiercely compassionate Grace. There are many who have experienced this and turned speechless (or speak only about her glorious presence) or become teary-eyed.

We also have a vEl, the worship of which was initiated by Swamy’s SabarimalA Guruswamy Mohanji, who is a upAsakar of many divine forms, including DEvi, Murugan and Dharma SAsthA. According to his specific guidelines and instructions, it is established within the puja room (which is essentially DEvi Linga Bhairavi’s sanctum sanctorum) and a daily process (combination of chanting and offering) is performed for it. Abhishekham and AlankAram are performed either on Sashti or on Tuesdays and special puja is performed on KArthigai and Thai Poosam days.
During the annual visit to the Kuladeivam temple at Kumaramalai (near Pudukkottai), this vEl is taken and kept in the GarbagrihA of the temple and all abhishEkhams are performed by the archakar for this vEl as well, along with the main deity (Sri BAla DhaNdAyudhapANi).

After an year (typical time between two SabarimalA yAtrAs along the Peruvazhi or Periya PAdhai route) of observance of the preliminary process, Swamy was initiated into a cleansing mantrA this year, which is in progress now. At some point in time, the formal mantrA initiation will happen and that’ll become the core JapA (chanting) process for Swamy’s spiritual pursuit (incidentally, Swamy also has been initiated into another JapA mantrA by his Upa Guru Sohamanandaji, but that doesn’t involve yantrA and tantrA).

Apart from this, there’s also a Sadhguru Sannidhi or PAdha yantrA at SwamyHome. It’s essentially the footprint of Sadhguru, filled with a special vibhUthi that’s available only at the Isha Ashram. This vibhUthi can be applied by anyone visiting our home. There’s a weekly Sannidhi Puja for this yantrA. Other than that, there are no restrictions on the space, unlike DEvi yantrA. There’s also a DhyAnalinga yantrA, which was received by Swamy Jr, during his ShAmbhavi MahAmudrA initiation, for which there’s no process at all.
Other than availing these yantrAs and practising the associated tantrA and mantrAs, as instructed by the initiators, Swamy isn’t really knowledgeable about the significance of each or even how they work. Strictly a user, with the sole purpose of attaining Enlightenment, leading to Mukti, Swamy has learned to simply trust Grace to guide him along the path, instead of resorting to the usage of his (usually very active and inquisitive) limited intellect to decipher the what, why, how, when, etc.

Swamily (Swamy+Family ~ Mr, Mrs & Jr) can however vouch for the effects of the usage, which have been experienced through many incidents, including dramatic physical manifestations that will raise the eyebrows of even firm believers (Swamy btw is not a blind believer but a serious seeker), events and changes in behavioral traits, both within and outside the home. Here are a few…
  • Elimination of a major surgery, which was initially thought to be unavoidable
  • A specific form of Devi (worshipped long ago in the past) demanding vastra arpanam
  • Reminder to start a specific aspect of spiritual sadhana, which was missing
  • Clarity about one’s own self through suya dharisanam, which is cathartic (seeing one’s own personality in all its gory glory – warts and all – is mortifying)
  • Unprecedented confidence in applying inherent talent and accomplishing significant milestones, almost effortlessly
  • Darshan of various forms, not associated with the yantrA deities
  • Sensing someone faraway physically, when that person underwent surgery
  • Quality and quantity of visitors
  • Stanzas for many Dhinam Oru Padhigam hymns
  • Pleasant passing away (including the post-death rituals) of a family member
… the list of such experiences and happenings is only getting longer, many of which can only be experienced and not explained. All such experiences are very real and truly enchanting, but one must be cautious about not getting stuck with these happenings and remain conscious that all these are just indicators for one to continue treading the path, towards the only destination, the final and ultimate liberation (Mukti).

On the survival plane of existence (Swamy is still a GrihasthA – householder after all and continues to take care of his beloved family), Life in the presence of yantrAs is blissful indeed, even after quitting the well-paying corporate servitude willingly (may be, especially after quitting it – ha.. ha..). And living is only getting better, every single present moment.
Unfortunately, YantrAs are sold commercially nowadays and anyone can procure and keep them at home and even perform some form of worship / process daily. This is not advisable as many of these commercial spiritualists may not be really knowledgeable in this ancient process and won’t be able to help / rectify any challenges faced by the buyers. If one doesn’t know how to ride a super bike, one shouldn’t get it and stick to a humble commuter bike or trusted scooter instead. It’s as simple as that.

In a nutshell, the combination of YantrA + TantrA + MantrA works, without a doubt, when done the ancient way ~ initiated by a Master or one who has attained Mastery, and adhered to all the instructions exactly as they are. Oh btw, yantrAs ensure the practitioner’s ‘needs’ are taken care of, not the numerous (and obviously, pointless) ‘wants!’ So, getting a YantrA to beat someone in something or become filthy rich in someway may not really work out that way.
Since the thought about yantrA (the mighty vEl of Lord SkandhaGurunhAthan, in your case) has been seeded in you (trust me, you haven’t thought about it – that’s the folly of ‘informed ignorance’), it’s only natural that you’ll also receive the necessary guidance from someone qualified, in time. Trust the most benevolent creator to shine the light on those who seek sincerely. Just keep the fire of seeking burning brightly, within.
May Grace be with you to avail the amazing combination of YantrA+TantrA+MantrA in this lifetime itself, to attain the ultimate. Shambho.

GangA Nhadhi DheerEy ~ Step 0

In the mountain abode of the Lord of Gods!

At 4.44 pm on 8th July 2017, the tower of the temple came into Swamy’s view. It was exactly as seen in the countless photos that pop up from a Google search for that exalted place. The 16 km uphill trek that took a little over 7 hours was about to conclude. But unlike in KailAsh, the floodgates held strong. Until an hour or so! 

When Swamy inched his way to the ancient temple that millions dream of going to, but only a few thousands actually manage to do every year, most only once in a lifetime, and had darshan of the Lord, the floodgates blasted open… washing away the wrongs – known & unknown – committed over several births, including this one. They weren’t tears of toil or torment, but those of pure joy. 

Through teary eyes, Swamy drank to his heart’s content, the magnificently decorated Swayambhu form of Lord KEdArnAth, the Lord of the Gods, MahAdEvA, glittering in beautiful alankAram, that’s more like his brother-in-law’s. It reminded Swamy about Lord AruNAchalA at ThiruvaNNAmalai, literally in the other corner of this culturally rich, complex nation called BhArat.

The wavering mind that usually wanders all around, simply seemed to stand still. The legs that were begging for rest, after the slow & steady uphill trek for over 7 hours, weren’t complaining anymore. Every acquired thing that was considered something in this lifetime, suddenly appeared insignificant. The mantrA that was being chanted inward almost non-stop till then too has chosen to remain silent. Nothing else seemed to matter anymore – other than just being in the presence of Lord KEdhAr, encompassed by his absolute stillness… immersed in his boundless Grace… 

The darshans of Adi Guru will continue to happen, all through the next day, Guru PUrNimA, a very significant day of the year for spiritual seekers. Some of the darshans were so intimate that Swamy, along with the fellow yAtris, would perform abhishEkam and arpaNam to the Lord inside the sanctum sanctorum, which is unimaginable in his state, where the Lord & DEvi can only be worshipped from a significant distance, especially in popular temples. One has to pay a hefty fee to get a closer darshan of the divine. Getting inside the Garbhagriham is entirely out of question. But in KEdhAr, the most benevolent Lord would let anyone – irrespective of caste, creed, status, wealth, fame, et al – to not only see him up close, but also to touch his Swayambhu form and offer worship directly. 

Two incredible happenings, within the short duration of a couple of days, would change Swamy’s perception of ancient consecrated spaces, forever. Experientially, of course, not philosophically. His inner experience at KEdArnAth, one of the holiest spaces of worship for the followers, believers & devotees of Lord ShivA, would incredulously repeat at BhadhrinAth, one of the holiest spaces of worship for followers, believers & devotees of Lord VishNu, in exactly the same way. 

The experience would quite literally show Swamy that 

அரியும் அரனும் ஒண்ணு, அதை

அறியாதவர் வாயில மண்ணு!”

“Hari (Lord VishNu) & HarA (Lord ShivA) are one & the same. 

Those who don’t realise that (Truth) will simply persish (to be born again)!”

Middle of the Endless Beginning!

Kalachakra2A while ago I wrote the post “Endless Beginning!” It’s about Life, like many of Swamy‘s posts. Just the way there are two sides to a coin (in fact, there’s a third side too – check this post if you’re keen to know Third side of a coin!) there’s the other side to Life too. It’s a side none of us want to see or experience but all of us eventually will.

Most mortals call it death. Some call it afterlife, with a faint hope that there will still be some life, after Life! All think it’s the end. Only a few know it isn’t.

Death3Death is as omnipresent as Life and is everywhere around us. Yet, unlike Life, we wait for an instance of death to acknowledge it. Acceptance is still far away for most.

When some stranger gets killed on the road and finally (no pun intended) manages to get his 15 minutes of fame in the newspaper or TV, it doesn’t crate much of an impact in us, beyond the few minutes of reading or watching, or at the most a tea or lunch time chat.

Death6When someone known passes away, the effect lingers on a bit longer. We’re flooded with their memories for a while. A young relative of mine passed away recently. He was just a teenager with a long and vibrant Life to look forward to, until that future ceased to exist, on a certain day. He did suffer for long due to a medical condition, but his family wasn’t prepared in any way when he finally bid goodbye to this Life. I was more an observer than a mourning family member during his last rites. Not because I’ve a heart custom-made with the choicest granite from the now controversial Madurai (my dear home town) quarry, but because that’s the fact – however cold it may sound!

Death5When someone very close to us ceases to exist, the effect is much stronger. Even devastating! We cry, curse God (we even have a God – Lord Yama – specifically for this purpose) for snatching their Life away, chide others who don’t seem to be as impacted as we’re and do many other things that keep the memory flame burning long after their Life flame was doused. Whenever I look at my two lovely daughters Mylo and Maggy, the fact that their lifespan is all of just 12-14 years never fails to flash in my mind. Half-way through their Life now – a very happy one for sure, they don’t resemble middle aged women ravaged by health issues of body and mind in any way, but certainly fall in that category – at least in human age scale! I don’t see my family reacting any differently from you, whenever the inevitable happens.

CrashedBike1While this is understandable as humans are highly emotional beings, it is worth knowing that the attachment we’ve with other beings – human or not – is not too different from the attachment we’ve with many other objects of desire. All of us have our favorite objects – a pen, bike, watch, shirt, mug, jewel, recliner or any of the million things that every household is packed with. It’s not hard to recall how we felt the last time one of them got broken, stopped working or had to be given away.

Bhishma1When someone dies at a ripe old age, we try to pacify ourselves saying they lived a good Life. I was witness to this when my grandfather died a few years ago, a relative of mine lost his mother and a neighbor lost his father. They all lived well, died old and everyone seem to have come to terms with their death soon.

DeadBird3When someone dies too young – as a baby – we try to console ourselves saying they were saved from the suffering that we go through in Life. The recent incidence I recall is the baby pigeon that died during the Operation Pigeon Rescue we’ve performed not so long ago and the entire rescue team was actually glad that the baby didn’t live to suffer more.

FuneralPyre1But when someone neither too old nor too young dies, we find it hard to apply the same logic, though they too lived their lives fully before their time was up. I had seen this thrice in my Life so far – twice in person – and the reactions of near and dear were similar in both cases. Acceptance is hard and time seems to be the best healer of the scars left by the untimely death on the psyche of family members and a few close friends.

Sadhguru10If we know Life, the way it is, while Living Life, we’ll understand and accept death better. my Master Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev says we fear that we don’t know. We’re afraid of death, because we don’t know it well. Since all our focus is on living, we don’t spend any time thinking about death. In the absence of thought light, lack of knowledge shrouds our mind like darkness. So, we invariably conclude death as dark and end up fearing it.

Monkay1As firm believers of ‘Ignorance is bliss’, we eternally (pun certainly intended) live hoping death isn’t going to knock our door today or some day in the near future. What’s inevitable appears as improbable in our minds – especially when it comes to our own Life. But when the inevitable happens – it will for any and every being – we are unable to come to terms with it and continue to live in denial. We try hard to fill the assumed void with thoughts – about the one that is no more.

FuneralProcession4Interestingly, we also glorify death, when it happens to those who we revere. A saint is said to have attained Samadhi, when he leaves his physical body, which is then enshrined and worshiped  long after they’re gone. A popular actor or politician gets a grand farewell and some of them a memorial too, which eventually becomes a tourist spot. Armed services personnel who lost their lives in a war are remembered and even rewarded, posthumously. And intriguingly, all these events also involve vast amount of flowers – as decoration in the form of garlands, a mark of respect in the form or wreaths or thrown at the passing carriage to pay obeisance.

Sadhguru10Flowers themselves die every day, yet we cherish their blossom and fragrance but don’t bother too much when it’s time to throw the withered ones away. my Master Sadhguru, a Gardener of Life with boundless grace for all beings, loves flowers and says flowers are wonderful examples of what’s possible for every being. But before our ignorance starts shining with vivid imagination, Sadhguru also clarifies that flowers don’t blossom to be liked by us nor do they give a damn about whether we like them or not. They just blossom because that is Life the way it is for them.

Flowers2Instead of just be born, live and die like any human being, we too can blossom to our maximum potential, pleasantly, and spread the fragrance of joy in others’ lives. And when our true inner self blossoms, without attaching any expectations, it also offers us the ability to transcend Life and accept Death as just another phase of Life.

RamanaMaharishi2Very few beings such as the enlightened masters attain realization of the true self during their lifetime. But death is a phase of Life in which the true self can be realized by all, without the trapping of the physical – even at the very last moment when we breathe our last breath. If we’re prepared to accept death in full consciousness, when it happens.

Aum-Namah-ShivayaIn that state, we’ll remain a mere witness to what we love as Life and dread as death. While one is manifest to be seen, heard, smelt, tasted and touched by the five senses, the other is unmanifest and can be understood only when we can go beyond the senses. If the manifest is Shakthi, then the unmanifest is Shiva. And comprehending Shiva isn’t an easy thing to do as he’s beyond comprehension (Swamy’s limited experience of being a Shivanga – an anga or part of Shiva – can be read in Shambho and the 7th Hill)!

YinYang1But it isn’t that hard to comprehend that Life and Death are entwined together all the time, which is symbolized by Ardhanarishwara – a form that’s a combination of Shakthi and Shiva. Yin-Yang is a representation of the same truth as well. Binary, the core of all things digital, too is an embodiment of this. The smartest ignorant beings – with an overrated sixth sense – that we are, we look (by using just one of the five senses) at all of these as mere symbols without comprehending what they truly represent.

UnmanifestDeath isn’t the full stop for Life, i.e., the end of Life, as perceived by most. It’s a semicolon rather, indicating continuity of Life, in a dimension that can’t be perceived by most.

Butterfly1A worm slithers around, becomes a fly, flutters around and falls back and merges with earth – in the space of a few hours.

A flower buds, blossoms, gets plucked, adorns and withers – in the space of a day.

A bird cracks out of the egg, eats worms fed by its mother, grows wings, flies away, lives in a nest, perishes with age or gets killed, cooked and eaten by another vicious two-legged being that relishes feeding on anything other than their own – in the space of months.

Gadgets1A shiny new gadget gets crafted out of metal and silicon, wows its potential buyers with mesmerizing power and abilities – many of which they won’t need, gets bought by millions, used for everything other than brushing the teeth, and gets traded or gathers dust when replaced by another shiny new gadget – in the space of an year or two.  

CowCalf1A mammal slips out of the womb, suckles, stands up, learns to walk, makes noises, feeds, finds a mate or falls in love, copulates, gives birth, takes care of its offspring, grows old and dies – in the space of years.

BanyanTree2A sapling springs out of a tiny seed, sprawls into a tree offering shade to all and bearing fruits for any, witnesses many a monsoon, typhoon and summer, gets cut by a stupid two-legged monster or falls when its purpose is served – in the space of hundreds of years.

Unmanifest1A universe appears out of nowhere, with a big bang, gives birth to planets and stars, lets Life find a way, spins around while Life flourishes and gets sucked into nothing, i.e., a black hole – in the space of many a millennia.

That’s the way of Life. That’s how it has been from time immemorial and how it will be for as long as there’s timeAs the Present becomes Past in the Future in no time, not learning the art of Living Life only exposes the Absurdity of Existence further. But to truly understand Life the way it is, one must be willing to go From Ordinary to Extra Ordinary!

Flowers3It’s always a Flower’s form at full blossom that’s remembered – as a garland adorning a deity or Guru, strung together and worn on hair or neck by humans, a sacred offering during puja or a natural ornament on the plant that gave birth to it. Their withered form, when removed and thrown away,  is hardly remembered by any, as they’re invariably replaced by fresh flowers, time and time again, starting the cycle all over again.

When the end comes, inevitably, it’s the Life we lived that should be remembered and cherished. Not the death, which is just another event in one’s Life. While celebrating death may be a bit far-fetched for many, accepting death as an inevitable event in one’s Life shouldn’t be so.

Fear not, for Death isn’t the end. Learn to embrace it, for it’ll anyway happen to all when their time’s up. Like the glorious crescendo of an orchestra, signaling the conclusion of perfect music played to a packed audience in a concert hall. In the Game of Life, both the musicians and the listeners will move on for another performance in another place on another day!

AfterLife2Fret not, for Death isn’t the beginning either. As the Life beyond it isn’t comprehensible with our limited senses. Like the glorious light from the Sun at dusk, which isn’t that different from that of the dawn! In the Dance of Life, the Sun is another dancer that goes on about its business, as long as it has to, before running out of gas and shrinking into nothingness.

Face Death nonchalantly by knowing it better, for Death is more the Middle of the Endless Beginning called Life!
