HMV!

3 Jun

HMV_Logo5HMV stands for “His Master’s Voice“, the iconic music brand with an adorable logo. While this post isn’t about music, it’s certainly about “His Master’s Voice.” Just <Ctrl-H> “His” with “Swamy!

As Jr.’s tournament schedule started immediately after his class X exams (with a short break at the Isha Yoga center thrown in between – Sr. & Jr. attended the Hata Yoga program also together during that :), Swamy thought it would be a good idea to keep him motivated to perform well in his games by sending a daily motivational message. And what better messages than “His Master’s Voice“, i.e., Sadhguru‘s quotes, published in the Isha Yoga daily calendar, to perk Jr.’s spirit up! Of course, Swamy couldn’t help adding his own twist to the daily messages 😉 Don’t be surprised at the recurring theme of joy, for that’s Swamy’s mantra for understanding and living Life the way it is!

HMV_Logo6As ever, the best piece of wisdom came from my better-half. She felt the messages were valuable (she should know as she accompanies Jr. to the tournaments) and wondered why a blog post isn’t yet published with those messages. And so here we are dear reader with “HMV!”, a post beaded together with the timeless wisdom from “His Master’s Voice!”

AK_CommonwealthJust think of any reference to game or tournament (Jr. is a professional Chess player of some repute after all) as referring to the Game of Life, and the messages will be relevant to whatever you do or like. And valuable, needless to say! Let’s start with today’s message first…

Monkay1If we keep thinking about unnecessary things again and again, there is a high possibility that they may actually happen. So, one must handle the mind instrument carefully!

Don’t keep thinking about past games or known opponents again and again. Focus your mind on today’s game and play it the best way you can.

Read “Saying Yes to Know!” to know how to keep thinking about unnecessary things at bay!

Child-creativeFirst understand how to live happily. Then you can think about understanding God!

First play happily and enjoy your game. Then you can think about understanding bigger things like World Champion.

Learn how to “Light up Your Life!” with happiness.

Death is just the end of a chapter. It isn’t the gateway for Moksha (salvation)!

Loss in a game is like a closed chapter. Open a new page to script victory again.

Read “Middle of the Endless Beginning!” to learn more about the inevitable, which incidentally isn’t the end!

mountain_climbingLet every step you take be for yourself, not against others. Only then, until you reach your summit, your journey will be joyful!

Your summit is becoming the World Champion some day. Make that trek joyful by taking one happy step at a time. Be joyful and enjoy your game today.

Read “Expressway to Excellence!” to know how to reach the pinnacle of what you’ve chosen to and love to do!

Thinking2Instead of getting stuck with the same problem, sometimes not thinking about the problem itself could lead to a solution!

Our problem is always that we’re stuck with the past – last game or tournament for example. Looking ahead to the future, i.e., next game, could be the solution.

Read “What’s your EMM!” to know about the magical moments when the mind goes blank.

BhagavadGitaSpirituality is meant for a person to break his boundaries and attain full potential. Not for just identifying with beliefs or rituals!

Sport is spiritual, if the sportsperson breaks boundaries or limitations to achieve his/her full potential! This is known as Karma Yoga. Be a Karma Yogi and play with joy.

Read “Shambho & the 7th Hill!” to know how Swamy has overcome physical and mental constraints to complete the Shivanga sadhana with his Master’s grace!

MSDhoni_Sixer_WCFinalBrushing teeth, bathing, opening a pen, putting signature… Try doing all of these with focus and you’ll realize a new energy springing within you!

If you play the game with unwavering focus, then you’ll have tremendous amount of energy to go for a decisive result. Focus and enjoy your game.

Read “Be an Ikeator!” to know how anyone can do anything better and enchant customers, readers, viewers, et al.

Those who’re unable to find fulfillment are the ones who try to control others!

Find fulfillment in your game by immersing in it with focus and clarity.

Read “Less is More!” to understand how, well, less is more!

Akash_Bronze_MedalWhen nothing happens, there is nothing called Life for you. When something unexpected happens, that’s called Life!

When you play the game on expected lines like business as usual, it may not be lively at all. Play an unexpected game today and have fun.

Read “Fifty 50!” to know the probability of nothing or something to happen in your Life!

Seesaw1Without knowing the self, it is useless trying to know about the entire world!

Know your strengths first and then use that knowledge in your games, rather than trying hard to know about everyone else’s.

Read “I Write, therefore I am!” to know how Swamy chose to leverage his strength to get loyal readers like you!

The only way to get rid of any habit is to be fully aware of what is happening now!

Be fully aware of each move in the game for a wonderful result.

Read “The Skill Pill!” to know the right pill to get rid of your habits!

Tom&Jerry1If your heart is full of tension and grief, then you can’t create happiness for those around you!

If you are tense and worried during a game, the result may not be a happy one. Be joyful when you play and spread the cheer.

Read “Beat Stress Away with SISA Yoga!” and laugh out loud to be less stressful and more happy.

The human mind is an instrument that needs to be handled skillfully. Without feeding the right thoughts into it, it can’t be operated well!

Indiansweets2Craving for tasty foods is due to our inability to handle the mind. Eat healthy food in small portions to stay healthy and focus on the game. Cheer up champ.

Read all about cravings and control in “Forty+ and the Four Letter Words!” Was it a coincidence that this message appeared on the calendar on the day when Jr. was down with food poisoning? Nope, it was providence!

BuddhaStop boring God by always asking for something. Instead listen to him when you pray. That’s meditation!

Listen within you when you play the game, instead of asking God to help you win a game.

Read “Joy Drops!” to know how deeply prayerful moments can reveal God to you!

Life is waiting for you with its treasures. It could appear as a little smile or big victory!

Every game is waiting for you with knowledge treasures. Play to win with a smile. Be great and victorious today.

Read “Living Life!” to know all about living Life the way it is!

Gayle_stormOnly when people learn how to be peaceful within themselves, world peace can happen!

Be peaceful inside, but play like a Gayle storm outside. (Needless to say, this was sent the day after the biggest Gayle storm hit IPL 2013)!

Read “20 Life Lessons from IPL!“, which shows there’s a positive side to IPL too!

Whatever you call as love, hatred, lust, kindness, they’re all an expression of the same power!

Win, loss, draw are all an outcome from the same player in any game. Channel the power within for desired result. Focus, relax and enjoy the game. Be great today.

Read “Element of Truth!” to comprehend the truth about that omnipresent power!

Sadhguru_DevotionBeing prayerful is very deep. But when praying is like seeking alms (begging) it is pitiful. Most prayers in the world are like that only!

Don’t pray for result, but pray for inner strength and clarity of mind. Then you won’t be worried about result, but will focus on the game instead. Be prayerful and great today champ.

Read “From Ordinary to Extraordinary!” to know how tapping the inner strength can elevate you to the summit you seek to scale!

kung-fu-panda-2When you’re unhappy, you behave like a horrible person. Whenever you’re happy, you’re a wonderful person!

Be joyful and spread the cheer. That’s the way to be a wonderful champion.

Know all about “A-Z of Life!” and be joyful!

If we think all our problems are because of others, there will be only anger and hatred, which will turn us into despicable people!

Win, loss or draw in a game isn’t because of others, but only because of ourselves. Take charge of yourself and your game for sweet results. Have fun while be(at)ing the best.

Read “No, We Can’t!” to stop thinking about what we can’t and start doing what we can!

Death2Self pity, anxiety, disinterest and sadness are more powerful than demons. These can do the damage that even real monsters can’t!

Don’t have self pity when you lose, don’t be anxious about today’s game, don’t ever lose interest and don’t feel sad about past performance. Be joyful, enjoy your game today and have fun.

Read “Toys R Us!” to understand how we’re mere toys in the hands of such demons and how to overcome them by being playful!

Tortoise_Hare1Showing your power against the weaker ones or those who can’t oppose you is the most despicable act!

Show your power and prowess against all kind of opponents in the game and play to win.

Read “Never & Always!” to know how to say never to oppression and always show compassion!

And as a bonus, here are two more, directly from Swamy – needless to say inspired by His Master’s Voice!

cwc-2011-final-yuvraj-cryingIf you lose a game after playing it hard, that’s fine. If you lose because you’ve lost interest in the game, that’s not fine. Play the game you love hard.

Read “The Difference of 11 & 12 is 13!” to learn 13 ideas to play the Life game hard!

Yesterday is past. It’s only for reference, not for remembrance. Today is a present and you can aim for greatness. Be great today, Be Joyful and Spread the Cheer 🙂

Read “Present is Past in Future!” to understand and appreciate why the present is a gift!

Less is More!

6 May

LG_4K_TV1Human beings want more and more of everything. Bigger homes and goods, larger TVs and mobiles, faster cars and bikes, heftier bank accounts, richer life style, fancier pet breeds, longer than 15 minutes of fame and so on.

While there’s nothing wrong with aspiring for more (wonderful beings like Robin Sharma will be jobless otherwise), what they don’t realize is craving for more often leads to less. Paradoxical, but true.

Choiceless means no choice left, not less number of choices. Hobson’s choice is the choiceless choice. But Life is full of choices and one must take the chance to pick a choice!

TVsAll those electronics superstore ads (IPL, May day, Summer vacation… pretty much any day is a good day for offers and freebies) woo you to upgrade your TV to an 85” 4K TV. 0% EMI makes it even more tempting. Other you’re your better half’s raised eyebrows (and a potential dinner and post-dinner cut ;), nothing’s going to stop you from acquiring your latest and greatest gadget. But the moment you land in that swanky superstore, you see a million choices in front of you, teasing and taunting you to try and buy. Making a choice becomes so hard that you may end up making your better half happy! Even if you made the choice – informed or otherwise, you’ve to also buy missile proof armour to protect yourself when that TV gets delivered at home. Hmm.. how nice it would’ve been to be choiceless and settle for that home cooked dinner!

verbal_vomitVoiceless means no voice, not less voice. The voiceless can speak of course, but their voice isn’t of any value.

Those of you who’ve cowered at that raised eyebrow and the prospect of not getting dinner may be called voiceless by those who make a lot of noise about anything. That smug smile on your face after a sumptuous dinner tells a tale, eh?

Monkay1Careless means doesn’t care, not less care. If you’re habitually careless, others will stop caring about you!

One must be careful while acquiring anything as the world is full of fake or not-so-good imitations of the really good stuff (invariably more expensive), which boast of the same kind of firepower as the exalted brands. Being careless can actually put a big hole not just your wallet but also in that funny thing called ego.

CrashedBike1Reckless means hasty, rash and irresponsible, not less (w)reck. It’s another matter that reckless behaviour invariably leads to some form of a wreck!

It’s quite normal for humans to be reckless based on assumed knowledge about anything and everything, due to their overrated sixth sense. But some wreck or other faithfully follows recklessness like a dog following its master.

Stairs1Pointless means there’s no point in trying hard, not less points for either being reckless or obsessively aiming for perfection in everything – by the self or others.

Perfection is a mirage, for we’re all imperfect creatures, whether we like it or not. So, what’s the point in pretending to be perfect in whatever we do?

OMG-PenguinbTasteless means lack of taste, not less taste. And being tasteless has nothing to do with food, but with pretty much everything else in Life.

Eggless means (for the gastronomically oriented Annamaya kosha beings!) no egg, not less egg. Speaking of eggs, the next time you gobble up a half-boiled or an omelette, you might want to remind yourself that they’re none other than aborted life forms, that which could’ve been a chicken, but aborted well before they were born! We know how the mother of an aborted baby feels, don’t we? That’s pretty tasteless for someone who boasts about having one more sense than that poor eatable 😦

OMG-A-BranchbSenseless means total lack of sense – common or sensory ones. Being senseless can be construed as lack of sanity as well. Or as nonsense, which isn’t any different from no sense, whatsoever.

Human beings are sensitive creatures. At least many are. But if we limit ourselves to being sensitive about self-preservation only, then we’re missing the whole point about Life, the way it is. That would be a pretty senseless way to live this precious Life!

Milo1bBreathless means out of breath, not less breaths. We’re breathless whenever we’re choiceless, voiceless, careless, reckless, pointless, tasteless and senseless. Which is pretty much all the time!

Have you ever observed your breath when you’re upset about your…

  • Inability to make a choice or raise your voice – like when you’re in front of your boss, at home or work?
  • Incredulity at the disastrous result of being careless or reckless – like when you met with or witnessed an accident?
  • Insensitivity about doing something that’s senseless or tasteless – like those pointless weekly BAU meetings you attend without fail?

Tom&Jerry1In all such situations, if you cared to observe your breath, it’ll be much faster than your normal breath. Well, probably not the last one, as you might anyway be half asleep (the pros will be fully asleep, with their eyes wide open)!

When you breathe faster, you age faster. Perplexed? It may be worth remembering that your lifespan is nothing but the number of breaths, not the number of years or days you live.

Dogs and Cats breathe faster. Their lifespan is short – just about 12-14 years. That includes your cuddly pet with adorable almond eyes and fluffy tail, with very few exceptions.

OMG-KirabAll the big cats breathe faster, especially when they hunt. They live just twice as long as dogs.

Alligators live as long as humans, as they can remain still in water waiting for pray for a long time, when their breath naturally slows down.

Elephants breathe much slower. Their long breaths result in a longer lifespan – longer than average humans. It helps that they’re usually sedate and remained vegetarian!

Tortoise_Hare3Tortoises and Swans live twice as long as humans, which is in direct correlation to their breath. It helps that they’re slow and elegant, not putting themselves under pressure, which typically is brought upon them by none other than the two legged beasts called humans!

So the secret of a long lifespan is to manage, regulate and control one’s breath.

Ouch, there goes up in the air all those cosmetic nips and tucks, special potions and diet fads!

There’s a whole science called Pranayama to do just that. It is said that sages lived for many hundreds of years. That isn’t baloney for they truly have mastered their breath and ate natural food, frugally to stretch their lifespans at will! And they’ve also managed to shed the other life limiter called ego.

BuddhaEgoless means absolute lack of ego, not a little less of an all-encompassing mushroom cloud like monster ego. Letting go of that cloud that shrouds reality is the first and most important step for self-realization.

All the self-realized Sages, Mystics and Yogis have managed to do that and meditated for long periods in silence to still the mind, which keeps fanning the ego fire tirelessly!

Colors of SilenceNoiseless means silence, not less noise. Silence is the most powerful sound as AUM, the origin of everything, came out of absolute silence.

Life came into being when the sacred sound manifested from the unmanifest. Only in silence, one can converse with the true self. For seekers who strive to experience and live Life the way it is, Silence is the way!

We always breathe more, speak more and think about ourselves more. Is it any wonder that we also worry more and thereby reduce our Life to a wreck? A clear case of more leading to less!

Crying_GirlThe way to a joyful, healthier, longer and more fulfilling Life is to breathe less, speak less and think less about ourselves. And that’s precisely why Less is More!
