Template living vs Life template!

One of the SwamyPals (a motley group of humans who have studied along / worked with or for / acquainted Swamy during this lifetime and for some unfathomable strange reason chose to remain connected with him, via an exclusive WhatsApp group) recently shared an article on the mid-life crisis faced by people. It’s one of those plethora of well-articulated, number list articles that can be sighted all over the www, which usually ends with an elegant invite to buy the article author’s book (how come even nondescript authors publish only best-sellers!) or sign-up for a signature training program that guarantees to change your Life, just like a million other lives or subscribe to his/er YouTube channel or at least follow on Twitter

1474812015120The problem with such articles – typically by western thinkers, philosophers, preachers (did ya know many popular leadership pundits / authors / trainers are preachers belonging to the multitude of congregations of Christian faith), trainers, pundits, et al – is that they’re always focused on templatizing humans, who are so diverse as a species that it’s utterly pointless to fit them into a template, for pretty much anything. Anyone who has gone through or have / know children going through formal education knows how horribly this templatization has gone askew. 

And the silly beings with an extra 6th sense that humans are, we invariably fall for such so-called deeper insights into the human psyche, supported by reams of research data or colourful Infographics from bigdata, and sign up gleefully for human software upgrade programs (it’s the Matrix, stupid!), generously offered as training modules by corporates – especially to the mid-lifers, i.e. Damagers, err.. Managers aka Supervisors, to ensure they never manage to get out of the BAUHumbug Template Living.

IMG_20161221_083334In the once-great culture of SanAthana Dharma (which, thankfully, is seeing a welcome revival), every aspect of living has been observed, analysed, contemplated and codified, to enable not only better living for all but also to remain undistracted from worthy pursuits of Life, while living vibrantly.

The SanAthana DharmA Life Template is so well crafted that it’s well nigh impossible to get caught in ridiculous things like early, late or mid-life crisis, if one is sensible enough to comprehend the purpose (context) of Life and apply the processes (content) of living. 

The human lifetime is practically divided into stages known as AshramA, each comprising of 24 years, which can further be divided into 12-year phases to enable a seamless transition from one stage to another.

Stage 1: 0-24 years ~ Brahmacharya AshramA 

~ the learning / student stage 

Swamily_PP10-12 ~ BAla ParvA or BrahmacharyA phase 1 – be a child – play, explore, be curious, learn using the senses, question everything, etc (mostly denied to all children, in this supposedly modern age, filled with a plethora of tools and technologies).

The UpaNayanam is an important event performed during this period to bring not only discipline in living (daily austerities to be performed, such as SanthyAvandhanam) but also to initiate the inward focus (through chanting of slOkAs, singing prayers and dancing, i.e. using devotion as a tool) at such a young age itself.

Formal education may also start at this stage, depending on the ability of the child and readiness of parents to actively support it.

12-24 ~ BrahmacharyA phase 2 – Learn life skills and ancient wisdom offered by the scriptures, under the tutelage of a respected Guru, in the Gurukulam (the present day schools don’t teach life skills & the boarding school is light years apart from the sacred learning space of Gurukulam), covering both physical (Hatha YogA, KaLari, sports, service to Guru, etc) and mental faculties (prANAyAmA, Mantra JapA, dhAranA, etc). Opportunities to practice the skills and earn (primarily to offer Guru DakshiNA) were also offered, to enable the transition to family life.

Swamily_PP2The focus of this stage is on DharmA (righteousness, ethics, values) & MOkshA (spirituality, awareness and practice of ways to attaining self-realisation). Artha (material aspects such as wealth) & KAmA (emotional aspects including sex) are kept aside through diligent practice of austerities and celibacy (where the current generation of students stand on those two is better left unsaid). 

At the point of transition to the next stage, the individual is offered a choice to either become a GrihasthA (housholder) or SanyAsi (ascetic). Nobody is ever forced to choose either option and the individual’s choice is respected and supported. 

Stage 2: 24-48 years ~ Grihastha AshramA 

~ the family / housholder stage

24-36 ~ GrihasthA phase 1 – get married (this could happen in the previous phase too, for specific reasons), work or offer services using the skills acquired for a living, raise a family, practice austerities prescribed in the scriptures, sustain spiritual practices.(though the work part happens today as well, there’s no appropriate application of life skills, because none are taught. Married life too is in tatters, because there’s no practice of austerities, which are designed to keep one grounded, truthful, thankful, empathetic and humble).

Swamily_PP5PANigrahanam or KannikAdhAnam aka marriage / wedding is a key ceremony at this stage, followed by the ceremonies to celebrate various stages of family life such as pregnancy (Seemandham), child birth (PunyAhavAchanam), first anniversary of the child (Ayushhomam), etc.

Nuclear families or community living was encouraged to ensure a sense of belonging by offering required help and guidance to each other, utilising skills and knowledge and sharing material wealth.

The focus is on DharmA (through lawful citizenship and rightful delivery of services), Artha (essential to make a living), KAmA (essential to start & raise family) & MOkshA (performing daily and Thithi specific austerities and continuing spiritual practices).

36-48 ~ GrihasthA phase 2 – mentor / guide children, who by now will be already in the Gurukulam or getting ready to learn about Life, share knowledge acquired (though experience) and wisdom gained (through ongoing learning and contemplation) with others, take care of elders (who will be in the later part of Stage 3 or earlier part of Stage 4 by now),

Swamy_PP1The focus is on Dharma (not wavering from righteousness), Artha (to serve others), KAmA (to be compassionate) & MOkshA (preparation for self-realisation).

Serving others – in whatever way one can – is emphasised during this phase. Service can be offered using limbs (Karma yOgA – selfless action), mind (GnAna yOgA – opinionless contemplation), heart (Bakthi yOgA – egoless devotion) or energy (KriyA yOgA – lossless transformation). This is primarily to prepare oneself to let go of everything else.

Stage 3: 48-72 years ~ VAnaprastha AshramA 

~ the knowing / seeker stage

48-60 ~ VAnaprasthA phase 1 – pilgrimage to holy places, reading scriptures & listening to spiritual discourses, contemplation on the true purpose of Life (based on knowledge acquired and interpretation of scriptures), seeking the guidance of a Guru / Realised Master (for attaining self-realisation), serving the Guru, effectively utilising the experience to offer help / guidance / service to anyone in need, practice detachment from all attachments of Stage 2.

Swamily_PP7The focus is on DharmA & MOkshA. At the end of phase 1, the ceremony of Shastiapthapoorthy (60th anniversary of existence) is conducted, celebrating the lives of two individuals spent together as GrihasthAs and preparing / prepared to pursue the spiritual path to liberation / mukthi.

60-72 ~ VAnaprasthA phase 2 – Officially an elder now, one can continue to guide the expanded family by remaining a part of it (detached from the Artha and KAmA parts, obviously) and offer service to others, while remaining surrendered at the feet of the Master, to continue the progress along the spiritual path.

Alternatively, one can leave the household and become a member of the Guru’s Ashram or any active spiritual organisation – either as a resident (GrihasthA without material & emotional attachments) or as a renunciate (mendicant and full-time sAdhakA / practitioner of sAdhanAs in pursuit of Truth).

The focus is on DharmA and MOkshA with a judicious mix of all four paths – KarmA or action (seva / service), Bakthi or emotion (devotional practices), GnAnA or wisdom (tapping into intelligence by keeping aside the intellect) and KriyA / energy (inward journey & exploration).

Stage 4: 72-whenever ~ SanyAsa AshramA ~ the renunciate / self-realisation stage

This is practically the realm of ShivA… the supreme being… the omnipresent divinity known as the Parabrahmam.

In an ideal case, if one has passed through the previous 3 stages in the right way, then there won’t be anymore self or I or ego left.

Swamy_PP10Living is a joyful vibrant existence, moving from one moment to another, with utmost ease.

The physical and mental faculties are useful only for serving others.

Material aspects such as name, lineage, fame, social status, wealth all remain immaterial.

‘I am not the body, I am not even the mind’ awareness keeps identity facades away. 

Guru is experienced as ShivA, a magnificent presence, not person.

Guru’s place is the holiest of places, for the rest of living time.

Guru’s words are the only scriptures to be referred, shared and cherished.

Contemplation is only to realise the self and attain liberation.

Devotion is towards all beings, offered in the form of absolutely selfless service, using KarmA, Bakthi, GnAnA and KriyA seamlessly.

Silence is  the most preferred way of communication.

Being still is the most important sAdhanA.

If one lives like that, at this stage or even earlier, the creator will have no other choice but to descend and liberate the self. That’s the proven – time and again – outcome of the Life template

It has happened to innumerable number of beings in BhArat and it is a possibility, even to you and me, even in these modern template living times.

Having sailed through mindless rote learning during BrahmacharyA… 

Having performed routine tasks and read & believed innumerable number list articles during GrihasthA…

Having indulged in more material pursuits during VAnaprasthA and getting further entangled with one more generation of progeny…

One may just be peering out of the barricaded window of an upscale old age home or a high-rise apartment where the neighbour remains a stranger… 

Still enjoying all material comforts that money can buy, pretending to be connected with the fellow senior citizens also living there, counting the number of days that have gone by after the last telephone call or email or WhatsApp chat of one’s child/ren, who is/are now a proud citizen/s of some other nation, where more such dime a dozen number list articles continue to be published.

Still remaining nostalgic about glories of a long gone past…

Still religiously visiting temples and praying for salvation…

Still reminiscing about the power and status one possessed once-upon-a-time…

Still debating the state of secularism in the world’s largest democracy…

Still complaining about the quality of food, compared to what one used to relish during the haydays…

Still yakking endlessly about countless mundane things…

Still getting religion and spirituality mixed up and confusing others too…

Still thinking one knows pretty much everything there is to know…

Still striving to live up to someone else’s expectations…

Still trying hard to be like someone else…

Still remaining ignorant about the real purpose of Life…

Still inching towards the inevitable death – only to be born again to continue carrying the burden of the humongous load of one’s own KarmA… and, in all probability… 

Still reading one more number list article by an intellectual about… whatever!

Past in Present!

The extended Swamily recently made a road trip to his home town Madurai, for his mother’s 70th birthday celebration ceremony (the traditional way with homam or havan, vedic chanting, etc). After the ever-customary Temple visit & purchasing all kinds of stuff (from eatables to brass items to Nannari sorbet to clothing to sticker bindhi to lamp wicks to gift items to rug cloth bags for saving the planet from plastics to what not…) and now-customary visit to Ramana Mandhiram (RamaNa Maharishi‘s uncle’s house, in the lane opposite to the South Gopuram of the world famous Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple, where BhagawAn had the profound death experience, while still in his teens, which set his historic one-way trip to the sacred town of AruNAchalA aka ThiruvaNNAmalai, to shine his “Who am I!” spiritual light on the world), they had some time in hand to visit the residence where they’ve spent several of their formative years. 

Present Past… 

During the return journey, the family took a quick detour into a suburb of Dindigul called NGO colony, where Swamy lived for a few years, during the middle & high school years. Swamy’s sister-in-law #3 (of the 3) made an insightful observation, when the extended Swamily were about to get down from the vehicle to see the old house at NGO colony, Dindigul.


Past Past… 

After being away from the family for a few years (for better education, he was left with his grandparents & maternal uncle’s family in Madurai, during the Primary school years, which happened at BAla Gurukulam & Sri VidhyAlayam schools, in S.S.Colony), this independent house (Swamy Sr’s first own house – quite an achievement then, for an honest government servant with a fairly large brood & an extended family) is where Swamy lived & studied from 6-10th standard (@ MSP Solai Nadar Memorial HSS, which apparently remains one of the top schools in the town); met with a life altering (quite literally) sports accident (shattered the knee cap due to improper landing at long jump – for which the PET didn’t bother to train anyone – that too immediately after a sprint, for which Swamy seem have a natural flair) not only abruptly ended his potential sports career (India still awaits an Olympics Gold in Sprint 🐥) but also forced him to discontinue the scholastic education (due to incorrect treatment by an allegedly drug-addict doctor, which resulted in 2 surgeries & prolonged the period of recovery to several months) that he (pretty much always) did well in (a State Rank in S.S.L.C & University Rank in Engineering will sufficiently substantiate that claim), for an year (which eventually made him Anna to his fellow students, then onwards, simply because he was an year senior to them 😜); became an ignorant agnostic for a short duration (blaming God for letting him down😣); turned believer (is it gnostic! 🤔) again; discovered (or re-discovered) his talent for sketching & writing (no formal training in either craft, other than joining a popular online course for painting & promptly discontinuing it soon 🙃); silently appreciated the value of family (hint: his left leg was in a PoP cast for months, due to 2 surgeries to fix his damaged knee, so he couldn’t go to the restroom on his own for awhile – at least until he could pull himself around with the cast 🤕), et al.


Long story short… or in today’s SoMe terms – blog story tweet 😁, that house occupied a significant number of gray cell real estate, to store piles of unreal memories, letting the mind reminisce the long gone past, as and when it liked. And there are a few other places like that as well (Swamy Sr was a humble – untainted as well – government servant, who was routinely transferred from one town to another, every two or three years), not only in Madurai, but also nearby towns like RAmanhAthapuram, Dindigul & UtthamapALayam.


Present Past… 

Incidentally, Swamy was inadvertently visiting some of these places, in the recent past, for different purposes. As a serious seeker, he is fully aware that there are no accidents or mere coincidences in Life. So, his sister-in-law’s (an intellectual & writer similar to Swamy, but doesn’t dabble on the spiritual space, unlike Swamy) remark triggered a thought train… (ah, that bloody wily mind… how glad is it to be in the thick of pointless action again.. & again.. & again.. 💭😱).

Here’s what she said (may not be verbatim, but close enough)…

Anna, you seem to be the most excited person, who wants to see this old house!

A pertinent point, considering the group of people getting out to see the house (now in dilapidated condition, locked out without any inhabitants) included 2 (out of 4) of his younger brothers (who too have lived there) & one more sister-in-law (who is familiar with the house) & the other s-i-l’s parents (who happen to be paternal aunt & her husband, for the brothers & thereby familiar with that house as well). The 3 kids (of the younger brothers) & the driver were just curious about all the excitement of the (yet-to-grow-up) adults, as they had no clue about the place. But the kids were naturally excited about climbing the wall & exploring the ancient dwelling of their parents, where they probably were the past replicas of them in the present! 😯


After spending a short while, checking every part of the house (it was locked, but one can go around, climb the stairs to the open terrace & also peep through the partially shut windows) & recalling a few interesting (or intriguing, depending on the perspective) incidents, the group left the derelict place, overflowing with memories of a long gone, but obviously not yet forgotten, past. The smartphones captured the house, frozen in time, for posterity, as it’s quite possible that none of them may ever visit it again! 


Past in Present… 

As the vehicle continued to clock kilometres on the expressway, speeding towards Chennai, so everyone but Swamy can rush back to their survival routine the next morning, Swamy recalled a different incident, from his Master Sadhguru’s life, which resonated with what he’s now going through. 

It’s called the Karma YAtrA, which enabled those involved in Sadhguru‘s consecration of the Dhyanalinga, (a one-of-a-kind perennial energy form, consecrated using the ancient mystical process of PrANa PratishthA, which is his Guru’s will that took him 3 births to complete), to experience their past, the memories of which was impeding their participation / presence, by exploring places of their past!

After reaching Chennai late in the night (which can also be termed as early in the morning), taking a brief nap & waking up fresh, listening to the cooing & chirping of birds, it became clear to Swamy that, he has started visiting places of his past recently, not to remember the past (that was a reality a long time ago, but obviously not anymore) but to let go of it (as it has no relevance or value to the spiritual pursuit, progressing towards self-realisation). For good! 
Though Swamy’s state of awareness is still limited to only the Present Past (past events of the present birth / lifetime) and yet to expand to the Past Past (past events in previous lifetimes), he’s at least clear about what needs to be done in the present, ASAP, about the past… Quickly cover a few more places that enshrine memories… to complete the Karma yAtrA, i.e. journey to the Past in Present! 👍👣😌🙌

Dhinam Oru Padhigam – The Big Ws!

Dhinam Oru Padhigam ~ the Big Ws!

Both for regular readers and occasionally curious (+ new) browsers, Dhinam Oru Padhigam (தினம் ஒரு பதிகம்) hymns remain an enchanting enigma. That includes the SwamyPals (there’s a WhatsApp group for this tribe who have either studied, worked, volunteered or interacted with Swamy at some point in this lifetime and got acquainted to this intriguing being and for whatever baffling reason want to remain connected with him – the group is administered by Swamy himself and new members are included from time to time) & relatives who have known Swamy long enough to know his dabbling with poetry (one of his many varied pursuits, none of which are pursued for economical purpose) in both Thamizh (தமிழ்) & English.

First of all, Swamy doesn’t sit down in a particular place, at a particular time of the day, to write any of these hymns. ✍️ He isn’t a professional Writer (or published Author, for that matter, at least not yet, except for twice, in the ’90s), though he has been writing – poetry, stories, blogs, quotes, reviews, et al – for a long time (from the ’80s).

The Dhinam Oru Padhigam hymns always simply flow. Anytime of the day (he has woken up from sleep 😴 late at night to write down a hymn). Anywhere (temples, ashram, his den / cave, train…). So, all Swamy does is to write them down, as and when they flow. He’s merely an instrument that’s useful for some definitive purpose.

At times, the flow is such a torrent that he had to recall parts of the hymn (or the whole hymn, in case more than one flow at the same time – which happened a few days ago at Thiru UttharakOsamangai திருஉத்தரகோசமங்கை, while having the darshan of AbhishEkam for the Dancing Lord) later.

Oh btw, they’re actually hymns with a tune (most are) and Swamy actually sings them while writing them down (he can instantly recall the tune as well), though Swamy has absolutely no knowledge of the nuances of music, in terms of RAgA or ThALA!

In a way, these enchanting hymns in classical Thamizh are written by an illiterate (who isn’t a qualified Poet) and sung by a musically challenged person (who isn’t a trained Musician). Howzatt for the boundless Grace of the most benevolent creator!😂

So, it’s natural for everyone – Seeker or not – to have the Big Ws (What, Why, When, Where, Which, WTF,  etc) fluttering in their minds, while enjoying these hymns, with the help of the explanation in English, of course – there aren’t many who comprehend these classical Thamizh (தொல் தமிழ் – well, almost) hymns by simply reading them. In fact, Mrs Swamy got so intrigued by this incomprehensible phenomenon (in the earlier days, Swamy used to wake her up from her deep slumber to share the new hymn that has just flowed – her reaction is left to your imagination 😒), that she started dragging Swamy to one Jeeva SamAdhi (of Siddhars) after another, seeking answers for the Big ?s! 👣

Padhiga Padhigam (a hymn about the hymns)

Essentially a conversation between Swamy’s mind and Swamy (whether the individual or the universal self is itself a big W, which we arent trying to unravel now), where the mind takes different forms – unreal / MAyA, of course – such as male, female, bird, mirror, wave, poet, garden and net and praise the hymns as one thing or another (trying the trick of praise that had even the mighty ones falling for it unfailingly, for eons), which Swamy steadfastly refutes and clarifies as an outcome of the Grace of Lord ShivA, Mother Goddess DEvi, their illustrious YOgi son Murugan, etc (signifying the 8 broad categories of hymns).

ENmaNi MAlai (8 garlands of gems / hymns)

There were obviously many questions even for Swamily, including but not limited to, Why is Swamy the chosen one (to write hymns, that’s all)?; How long will this go on?, etc. Swamy Sr even tried doing some genetic research to dig out an ancestral connection (no, there arent any – at least none poetically inclined, so far).

Part of the answer came one fine day (aren’t they all – until we make them not so, with our screwed up intellect!), around noon, before brunch (both Mr & Mrs Swamy eat only twice a day, that too PrANic food, as much as practically feasible), when Swamy was in the midst of one of his daily meditations. 8 titles flashed past swiftly and he knew instinctively that they’re nothing but the logical grouping of the hymns that flow through him. Here they are… 👇


Shiva MaNimAlai (சிவ மணிமாலை) 

~ Garland of gems / hymns on Lord ShivA. This could potentially be more than one book, going by the rate at which the Dancing Lord is showering his Grace through hymn after enchanting hymn. Its quite normal for Joy drops to flow, either while writing or singing Shiva MaNimAlai (சிவ மணிமாலை) hymns (பதிகங்கள்), which gives one the taste of – in terms of direct experience – the state of devotion that Saints like NhAyanmArs (நாயன்மார்கள்), ThAyumAnavar (தாயுமானவர்), Kumaragurubarar (குமரகுருபரர்), Adi ShankarA (ஆதி சங்கரர்) and ArutprakAsa VaLLalAr (அருட்பிரகாச வள்ளலார்) must have experienced.😇


Shakthi MaNimAlai (சக்தி மணிமாலை) 

~ Garland of gems / hymns on Mother Goddess DEvi. She took her own sweet time to let her Grace flow through the hymns, but whenever she chooses to flow, its always a torrential downpour that will immerse and envelop one in her unconditionally Universal Motherly Love thats fiercely compassionate – the same torrent that must’ve drenched AbirAmi Bhattar (அபிராமி பட்டர்), Adi ShankarA (ஆதி சங்கரர்), KALidAsA (காளிதாசர்) and many such DEvi upAsakAs (தேவி உபாசகர்கள்). 😂

Guha MaNimAlai (குஹ மணிமாலை) 

~ Garland of gems / hymns on the Lord & Devi’s illustrious YOgi (+ warrior, created for the sole purpose of annihilation of evil) son Lord Murugan (Karthikeyan, Kumaran, Skandan…), who is also very special for Thamizh people worldwide (தமிழ்க் கடவுள்) and also happens to be Swamily’s family deity (ஸ்வாமி குடும்பத்தாரின் குலதெய்வம்). Those who are familiar with ancient Thamizh hymns (like Mrs Swamys maternal aunt) say, these hymns resemble the magnificent (& still very popular) ones sung by the Saint Poet AruNagirinhAdhar (அருணகிரிநாதர்). Swamy eventually realised this connect (which was clearly indicated during the advanced YOgA program called SamyamA, which Swamy did in his Master Sadhgurus presence in 2013) and prostrated at the incomparable poets Jeeva SamAdhi (ஜீவ சமாதி) at ThiruvaNNAmalai (திருவண்ணாமலை), during the Pancha BhUtha Sthala YAtrA (பஞ்சபூத ஸ்தல யாத்திரை), requesting him to guide Swamy as a MAnaseeka Guru (மானசீக குருநாதர்).

Iha MaNimAlai (இக அல்லது அக மணிமாலை

~ Garland of gems / hymns on the vast (and deep) Internal Space (within every being), where the Lord resides, active but dormant, until the seeking for Truth starts. As Swamy’s Master Sadhguru says “The only way out is In!” (வெளியேற ஒரே வழி உள்ளேதான் இருக்கிறது). 


Para MaNimAlai (பர அல்லது புற மணிமாலை) 

~ Garland of gems / hymns on the perceived External Space (by every being), which isnt real, until one realises the trap in which one is entangled (for many lifetimes) and the thirst to know the way out becomes so unbearable (like a painful scream within), when a Guru happens (to guide the Seeker along the path to liberation). That’s how Sadhguru happened for Swamy (who he didn’t even know) and turned his Life outside-in! 🙃😌

Thava MaNimAlai (தவ மணிமாலை) 

~ Garland of gems / hymns on the Spiritual process / pursuit, in the form of SAdhanA, on any (or many or all) of the four paths, viz KriyA, KarmA, Bakthi & GnAnA, (க்ரியா யோகா, கர்ம யோகா, பக்தி யோகா, ஞான யோகா) and the experiences related to such SAdhanA (ஆன்மீக சாதனை அல்லது பயிற்சி). Since the proportion or mix of these four well-treaded paths varies from seeker to seeker, the need for a Guru has always been emphasised as essential in this liberation focused culture, in order to progress towards mukthi (முக்தி அல்லது வீடுபேறு). 

Pugazh MaNimAlai (புகழ் மணிமாலை) 

~ Garland of gems / hymns, in praise of the innumerable Saints, Masters, Devotees and Seekers, who have walked the spiritual path before us, and chose to share their (at least quite a few of them) experiences and methods with the ones who may eventually walk along the same path leading to the Truth. This liberation focused (not God focused, as widely misunderstood, because of the innumerable number of Gods & Goddesses we worship) culture always had many eminent spiritual beings (ஆன்மீக சாதகர்கள்) and Masters (குருமார்கள்), who not only attained self-realization (தன்னை அறிதல்), but were always willing to guide others along the path to liberation. 🙏

GnAna MaNimAlai (ஞான மணிமாலை) 

~ Garland of gems / hymns on the experience of self-realisation and ultimate liberation (mukthi). As of now, Swamy isnt qualified to write these (as he isn’t a realised being, yet). But as and when they’re written down, they will certainly resonate with (& possibly resemble) the enchanting hymns written by many realised beings (ஞானோதயம் அடைந்தோர்), who had experienced the direct perception of reality / ultimate Truth (மெய்ஞானம்), before him. 

Of course, being a gray haired Millennial, Swamy uses digital devices (smartphone & tablet – both Android) & tools (Google Docs, Evernote, 2 different Photo Editor apps) to write down and publish these hymns, on social media, so that fellow seekers (and followers who aren’t yet seekers) too can get drenched in the boundless Grace of the creator.

All the Dhinam Oru Padhigam (தினம் ஒரு பதிகம்) hymns are freely available for anyone who seeks (at least some answers about this seemingly pointless existence) and will continue to remain free on social media (FacebookGoogle+TwitterWhatsApp, Pinterest, Swamyem / DhinamOruPadhigam blog). 

There are plans for a dedicated blog / website (http://www.dhinamorupadhigam.net or .org or https://DhinamOruPadhigam.wordpress.com) that’ll have the hymns (logically grouped in the Eight ManimAlai categories), with explanations in English & Thamizh (requested by many, who are conversant with the language but unable to comprehend the nuances in the hymns fully), and in audio form as well (in Swamy’s voice). An YouTube channel too is a possibility, in the future.

With Grace, these collections of Dhinam Oru Padhigam hymns might even be in the hands of Seekers like you, in the form of published books, someday – hopefully sooner than later! Hopefully you won’t mind paying for them, as and when they’re published – in both analog & digital formats 😜 And share them with your near & dear, as a gift for starting their own seeking.👍

5 Steps to Tread the Seeker’s Path!

Swamy, a serious seeker (‘pro seeker’ will sound hilarious 😂)  has never searched for a Guru.🤘 Hard to believe, but true.

He probably (but seriously 🤔) searched for answers to the Big ?s of existence and His Master Sadhguru ‘happened’ 🙌, when either the time was ripe or when Swamy was somewhat ready to shed his Director Prakash (one of the many ‘pro’ identities) tag, or both. Until the happening, which was nothing less than a Tsunami (whose massive tidal wave is still sweeping Swamy away, like an uprooted tree), he didn’t even know about either Isha or Sadhguru! 👀

Despite being on the lap of a living Master for a while now, in whose lotus feet he has surrendered pretty much everything one considers precious in a survival focused existence, like any true seeker, Swamy truly enjoys being in the presence of other realised Masters (there are many, everywhere one cares to search) as well 😇

A few months ago, Swamy was blessed to be in the presence of NannagAru, a realized Master from RamaNa Maharishi’s GnAna yOgA path, at ‘நினைத்தாலே முக்தி தரும் ஸ்தலம்’ ThiruvaNNAmalai 😌, during the Pancha BhUta YAtrA he undertook along with 3 other fellow KailAsh yAtris.🙏

And the experience of being in NannagAru’s presence was exactly the same as being in the presence of his own Master Sadhguru 🙏😂🙌

Which was, once again, exactly the same in the Jeeva SamAdhi of GuruswAmy, a Siddhar who is a contemporary of BhOghar (of Pazhani NavabhAshANa DhandAyudhapANi fame) @ RAjapALayam (inside AmbalappuLi bazaar) 🙏😂🙌

Such experiences reiterate the well known, yet hardly deliberated or discussed, fact – All Masters have experienced the same omnipresent Truth and all of them are compassionate to offer methods for the rest of us – those who at least have made an attempt to seek answers for our pointless, pathetic existence as humans – to attain the exalted state that they attained and remain in, even after they leave the physical presence. 🙏😌🙌

Obviously, their methods vary. And our silly intellectual mind ends up experimenting with some (or many) of those methods and invariably ends up comparing them, amplifying the confusion manifold. And inevitably delaying the progress along the spiritual path. So, is there a way out, for a Seeker to get unentangled from the spider web created by his/her own mind, and make steady progress towards the objective of self-realisation?

Of course there is. The way out (of mere survival), which essentially is the way in, has been the chosen way for all those who sought the answers before us. All one needs to get on that expressway to Emancipation is to follow these 5 simple steps diligently…

Keep the ‘acquired knowledge’ aka intellect aside ~ this is the hard(est) first step since this also requires disentangling one from oneself, i.e. the Ego / Perosnality 😱

This is a big ask and could potentially take many lifetimes! So, having a Guru, who is like a live GPS for navigating the vast spiritual terrain, certainly helps. Who knows (except the Guru!), one might even realise the Truth in this lifetime itself, if one knows how to ignore oneself, so that one can know one’s real self!
Shut the silly mouth, so one’s boundless stupidity remains safe within and doesn’t spread like an epidemic.🤐

Humans, over-rating their one additional sense, just talk too much, about everything, even though they know too little, about anything. Talking is a colossal waste of time and energy, both of which needs to be conserved, if one is serious about walking the long path to self-realisation. So, it’s important (critical!) for a serious Seeker to STFU!

🖖 Acknowledge the existence of something bigger, better, exceptionally capable and incredibly enchanting – even if one can’t see, hear, smell, taste or touch to comprehend that.🙏

Humans just a minuscule part of the immeasurable, vast creation, whose expanse, variety and intricacy is far beyond human comprehension (despite being endowed with that grossly over-rated sixth sense and carelessly overused five senses!).

We’ve absolutely no clue about how the Sun goes about its daily routine, like clockwork.

We still don’t have the ability to create even a single blade of grass – in any colour – ourselves.

We’re still in the process of deciphering our own species – quite possibly the most complex organism created, ever.

Yet we firmly believe we’re on top of the food chain and know stuff.

We don’t know. That’s a fact. 

So, we better acknowledge that fact and accept the presence of something beyond our comprehension. Call it dark energy or ShivA or Almighty or whatever. It’s very much there and we don’t have a clue about it. Even after millions of years of evolution into the most self-destructive species ever created. Clinging on to just a single planet in the vast space strewn with innumerable planets.

Whatever one doesn’t know, one can only know that from someone or something that knows a thing or two – including the one who doesn’t even know what one doesn’t know! So, we better acknowledge the presence of the One thing that seems to not only know everything, but has also created each and everything! 

✌🤘Remain still, i.e. sit quietly, daily, with a keen desire to know that higher power, which incidentally resides within every single piece of creation – including us ignoramuses 😌

Humans love being busy. The busier the better. 

“I’m more busy than my colleague / partner / neighbour / competitor…” seems like a badge of honour we’ll proudly wear.

Busy doing what? Studying more… Earning more… Acquiring more… Accumulating more… Hurting more… Destroying more…

Where does this business of busyness end? When the heck will it end? Will this ever end?

Being merely busy, either for the sake of it or to make more of something on the materialistic realm, doesn’t do anything for self-realisation, which is purpose of our very existence as human. And realising the self happens only when one can remain still. For increasingly longer periods of time. For a long time!

Silence is the way of the seeker, not to go forward but inward!

🖐 Strive – through some form of sAdhanA – till the Truth is realised, through profound inner experience. 😇

SAdhanA can neither be self-taught (unless one happens to be an exception like Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi) nor learnt from others’ thoughts – through books and many a colourful (and powerful) media.

That’s why a serious Seeker needs a Guru. Someone who not only knows (through deep personal & direct experience) the Truth, but can also teach a method or two and has the ability to offer the right SAdhanA (practice) concoction in the right proportion, for each and every Seeker. 

Anyone who tried to seek intellectually would know – intellectually, of course, not experientially – there are broadly four paths to liberation. But rarely does a Seeker stick to just one path and attain liberation. Seeking actually needs a blend of the four paths – KriyA, KarmA, Bakthi & GnAnA – and only a Realised being (Master is even better, but hard to find a true one – especially for the ‘Guru shoppers’ who go around with a checklist and keep hopping from one Guru to another, until there’s no one left) will be able to determine the mix that’s required to accelerate and sustain the seeking, until the journey is complete.

Swamy, whose serious seeking started in 2009, guided by the living Master Sadhguru, has no idea at which stage of realisation he is at present 🤔, but is absolutely sure about (& fully conscious of) a few indicators that keep reassuring he’s on the right path. 👣 And he’s totally focused on realising the Truth in this lifetime itself, so that he becomes free of the repetitive cycle of birth and death, forever.

Step 3 ~ The 3rd Dimension

From the triumvirate of Gods known as ThrimUrthi, viz BrahmA, VishNu & RudrA (not ShivA, as it is usually misunderstood and stated – RudrA is an aspect of ShivA, not ShivA himself, who as MahAdEvA is the unmanifest that’s way beyond a mere role playing God) and God6desses Saraswati, Lakshmi & DurgA (all aspects or forms of Shakthi, the all-pervading, all-encompassing Mother Goddess of all creation, at a magnitude and scale that’s simply unimaginable by the limited human intellect), the number 3 has always been significant in SanAtana DharmA, which naturally reflects in many aspects of day-to-day living as well. Needless to say, there are countless upa dEvatAs or relatively lesser Gods, present around the sanctum sanctorum of Life, some of whom even have a specific role to play, during every being’s lifetime(s).

  • Mother, Father & Child(ren), in the family. The unlimited number of relatives that poke their nose into the family business are the upa dEvatAs, obviously

  • Teacher(s), Student, Parents(s), while studying (not to be confused with learning, which doesn’t usually happen within the school but mostly outside it). Lab assistant, Sports coach, unfriendly accountant diligently collecting the fee (and the fine), et al are the upa dEvatAs

  • Boss, Worker, Team, while toiling hard to make a living. Humourless HR, automaton Admin, funless Finance, sincere Security, clueless Quality, etc are some of the upa dEvatAs

  • Doctor, Patient and Insurance company at hospitals, with a zillion departments to perform quadrillion tests with imported equipments (gotta use em’ all), occasionally smiling nurses, always smirking attendants and the statuesque (read expressionless) billing clerk are the upa dEvatAs

  • Teams, Fans / spectators, Officials (including referees / umpires, organizers, etc) in sports

  • Actors who – supposedly – perform (and overrate themselves), Fans who adore them (consciously keeping the brain aside) and the Crew (including Director, producer, et al) that continues to churn one mindless dumb movie after another  

  • Shopkeeper (the one who sells), Shopper (the ones who buy) and Product makers (the one who make the ones that are being sold and bought) in shops – huge and tiny

  • Deity, Devotee and Priest (and the mysterious government department that merrily milks the devotion dry in the name of managing the temple administration) in places of worship

  • Trekker, SherpA and the Mountain, in mountaineering (not to be confused with the amateur day-trips – with tiny backpacks and shiny camera/phones, no less – called trekking, to the friendly neighbourhood hillocks)

  • Farmer, Cow/Bull and the Land / Crops…

  • Gardener, flowering Plants and Birds / bees / butterflies…


But when one starts the stroll down the spiritual path – accidentally, like Swamy, or otherwise – the 3rd dimension shines in an altogether different light. In fact, it is so in all the aforesaid examples too, if one is willing to set aside time to comprehend (which, humans hardly do).


For example, at home, the 3D is the actual upbringing of the child, which need not necessarily be all done by the parents themselves.

In sports, it’s the joy of being part of the action – actively or passively – where the team’s pursuit of excellence matters more than the talented bunch of chosen individuals.

In temples, it’s the devotion, which need not even be overtly expressed, of the devotee towards the divinity, not the deity per se’.

…keep comprehending (a better alternative to being a couch potato today, even as the epic, throwback to a glorious nostalgic past, Fedex-Rafa grand slam final plays out on your prized mega size UHD TV) the 3D of the rest of the examples…


The list of such 3s is as long as the utterly pointless conversations that humans have everyday as if their living is dependent on such small talk and not on the prANA that sustains Life. On the spiritual path, the 3Ds are the  Guru, Disciple and the Path itself (we’ll climb that next step together in “Step 4 ~ Four Paths of Pursuit).

In the context of SabarimalA yAtrA, the 3Ds are the GuruSwamy (an experienced, and in some ways authorised, guide to those seeking the Lord’s darshan – or an inner-darshan that’s encapsulated within the process of yAtrA), the YAtri (who is none other than the seeker, whether s/he realises it or not) and the yAtrA itself (leading to the final surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Dharma SAsthA, which represents shedding the last vestiges of the individual identity to become one with the supreme reality). And the upa dEvatAs in this soul search are innumerable, not just in number but also in variety and the numerous ways each one makes the journey absolutely enchanting.

The 3rd aspect or dimension of the yAtrA (pilgrimage) that is better experienced than explained, was revealed to Swamy, slowly but surely, in myriad ways (some even appearing to be mystical), through first-hand experience, as the yAtrA progressed.


Before the actual yAtrA itself commenced, while the vratham (preparatory sAdhanA for a mandalam) was in progress, Swamy’s Upa Guru (UG, from now on) told him something that captured the purpose of the yAtrA beautifully. The essence of that is (not necessarily verbatim),

“You can choose to be a driver or passenger in this yAtrA. You’ll see both types in this yAtrA (or any yAtrA for that matter). Neither is right or wrong. You get to be a driver, if you do sEvA (service, of any kind). The more sEvA you do, the more wonderful your yAtrA (experience) will be. It’s your choice, of course.”

In any journey, the passengers perform just what’s necessary for their journey. Exactly as they do while traveling from one place to another, during any time of the year. For many, it could well be the umpteenth journey, as a passenger. Mostly passive and occasionally active – in their areas of interest or zones of comfort – they chose to go with the flow. They too get to complete the journey, aiding its progress in doing a thing or two that they feel is sufficient. May be they don’t think the yAtrA as something very different from their daily routine, when one is usually served things, all through the day, without being expected to serve. 


It’s hard to read what goes on in a person’s mind, which has a way of its own. The passengers simply chose to ride along with this particular group and their ride probably wouldn’t be any different if it’s with any other group. From their perspective, may be it’s the right thing (or way, rather) to do – not hindering the progress by simply remaining a passenger. In any case, sEvA has to be offered by oneself and can’t be demanded from anyone.

The drivers perform what’s essential for the journey itself – not just theirs, irrespective of however many times they too have done it before. Right from purchasing to packing / unpacking / repacking to booking tickets to planning the itinerary to preparing food to performing pujAs to ensuring adherence to well-defined rituals to guiding the yAtris on well-practiced but hardly predictable treks to caring for every individual’s well-being to cleaning to leading teams to offering insights to what not… they’re the silent ones that keep the yAtra chugging along, as merrily as possible, while being a yAtri as well.


Swamy too had been a passenger before, in the life-altering yAtrA to the abode of Lord HariHaraSudhan’s illustrious father, the YakshaswarUpA who transmitted the ways and methods of liberation to the Saptharishis as Adi Guru (first Master) DakshiNamUrthy, i.e. KailAsh-MAnasarOvar, in 2013, when he first met his UG, who seemed to be everywhere, doing a multitude of things, all along the yAtrA.

But not being a stranger to volunteering – thanks to his many years with his Master Sadhguru’s magnificent spiritual organization called Isha Foundation, whose phenomenal global growth is rooted in volunteering – Swamy kept an open mind to what(ever) he could perform, in terms of sEvA, during this yAtrA. And the opportunities kept presenting themselves, sometimes one after another and at times without a break to even catch a breath or two.

May be it’s time for Swamy to follow his UG’s footsteps this time, being a part of the bus that aids the journey’s progress, in whatever little way he can. In hindsight, it appears that’s how the Lord has destined it to be – even if it’s just his maiden yAtrA to the powerful hill shrine of the PandaLa RAjakumAran, with limited knowledge of the yAtrA itself and pretty much no knowledge about what needs to be done during it.

The early signs of how the yAtrA would pan out could be seen at the very moment Swamy boarded the yAtrA bus that’ll take them from base camp at KalpAthi (near PalghAt), after the Irumudi ceremony (the most critical mandatory step for any yAtri, before the ascent begins) happened. Having done his bit at unpacking & repacking location-wise materials and a little bit of alankAram (floral decoration, which he immensely enjoys doing at DEvi Linga Bhairavi’s shrine in his humble abode) for the ceremony, Swamy boarded the bus after the customary coconut breaking in front Lord VignEswarA,  later that night, and faced a sea of strangers who have already occupied the many rows of seats with saha-yAtris who they’re already familiar with. May be they’ve been occupying those seats for several years, who knows.


None of them appeared too keen on befriending the strange looking KanniSwamy (Swamy’s appearance – an elderly looking man in saffron dhoti with a flowing white beard, which is invariably perceived as that of a seasoned SabarimalA veteran, if not a Guru Swamy, will lead to many hilarious situations, all through the journey :D, proving the age-old dictum that appearances can indeed be deceptive). Slowly making his way past all the rows of seats, he ended up in the very last row, where too there seemed to be no place for the new comer. As he can’t go any further (without breaking the rear window), Swamy made a little space in that seat where a few bags too were seated (the patented Indian way of reserving seats 😉 and sat down on that last row – notorious for guaranteeing a j/bumpy ride to any occupant, anywhere – expecting to be told by someone that that seat too was taken.

But his fear of standing through the journey was unfound (ah, the games that the devious mind loves to play ;), as a friendly gentleman who came minutes later, took off the bags that were on the seat, placed them on the floor and sat down at the corner, next to Swamy. He then let out a hoarse cry “bOlE bAbA,” that got an enthusiastic response “pAr karEgA” from many yAtris, followed by “TrishUl dhAri”, with an equally enthusiastic response of “pAr karEgA” from many.


In that moment – especially when he heard the name of AdiyOgi Lord ShivA – Swamy intuitively knew he was in good / right company. 80% of that last row occupants happened to be drivers in the yAtrA (there’s no escaping the 80-20 rule, even in the last row of a bus full of yAtris headed for an annual pilgrimage), i.e. full-time volunteers who were always in the thick of the action, not necessarily in the forefront but in the rear ranks that keeps fueling the yAtrA forward, making it easier for Swamy to get his hands dirty with sEvA, quite literally.

And at least one of them (obviously the remaining 20% part of the 80-20) was exceptionally silent, throughout the journey, something a serious seeker like Swamy immensely enjoys, even when he’s in the urban steel and concrete jungle that we hilariously call home. In short, Swamy felt at home in that last row, being exactly where he really belonged.

Just being open to possibilities led to Swamy getting a multitude of opportunities to perform different kinds of sEvA, all through the yAtrA. There were some he chose to be part of (sometimes simply to avoid getting embroiled in small talk going on in all directions) and quite a few where he was called to perform a specific task (and was kindly instructed how to go about it). As time passed (or paused, as it seemed – especially since there were no phones or calendars to check date and time), Swamy’s very first yAtrA to the abode of Lord YOga SAsthA simply went into autopilot mode, with even the miniscule contributions of his towards the many aspects of the yAtra driving his steps forward. One small step after another. All the way to the Lord’s sannidhAnam. Where the Lord who is always depicted as a child or youth gave darshan to Swamy as a yOgi with a beard!

18 Steps to Emancipation! ~ Swamys first SabarimalA yAtrA experience (January 2017)

Step 2 ~ Past in the Present

Swamy consciously avoids dwelling in the past and speculating the future, trying to remain rooted in the present moment instead, following his Master Sadhgurus powerful saying This moment is inevitable. But as he sat on the wooden platform inside the viri (place of stay – there will be many all along the route to the holy shrine, while this one was specifically assigned to the group that Swamy belonged to) at SabarimalA, baked by the boiling sun, he couldnt help going back to how and when it all started.

When Swamy went to the Pancha BhUta Sthala* yAtrA with his UpaGuru^^ last year, there were many interesting conversations. During one of them, Swamy casually mentioned that he had never been to SabarimalA. Being a veteran of SabarimalA yAtrA (apart from many other such yAtrAs, needless to say), his Upa Guru immediately offered to take him along the next time. He promptly pinged Swamy in November 2016 and informed that he has to start the one mandalam Vratham (sAdhanA, to be observed by all yAtris to SabarimalA). Few other instructions and guidelines followed and on November 16, 2016, Swamy took the baby steps for his maiden yAtrA to the holy shrine of SabarimalA, which culminated in the darshan of the Lord of the Five Hills (AindhumalaivAsan) on January 15, 2017.

Though Swamy had witnessed the spectacle of grand pUjAs performed to Lord AyyappA at his maternal grandparents home in Madurai, while he was still in primary school (two of his maternal uncles have been regularly going to SabarimalA at that time, via the longer Periya PAdhai, as part of the famous Neelakanda Ayyappan group from Madurai), the thought of going there has never occurred to him. Later, one of his younger brothers also went a few time and even his father too undertook the yAtrA once. That makes it abundantly clear that SabarimalA yAtrA is more a calling of the Lord than a person’s choice. And the Lord must have decided that Swamy was ready only when he was 46 years old and completely free of survival related pressures.

The twice daily pUjA (floral offering while chanting the AshtOthram or 108 names of the Lord), followed by SharaNam (a series of 21 chants thats unique to the Lord, who is also known as SharaNa GOshappriyan, followed by prostrating on the floor, after each chant), NaivEdhyam (of a simple sweet liquid called PAnakham) and Aarthi (performed with Karpooram / camphor) happened beautifully without a break. Almost on all days, the Lord was also decorated with flowers. All austerities (that aren’t too different from the YamA & NiyamAs in the scriptures) to be followed along with the daily rituals were also adhered to, as prescribed.

Being a seeker on the spiritual path for a while now, guided by the boundless Grace of his Master Sadhguru, performing a sAdhanA for a mandalam or adhering to specific food consumption guidelines were a no brainer for Swamy (pretty much a given for any and every spiritual sAdhanA, which keep coming one after the other, year after year). But all that didn’t offer even a hint as to what the yAtrA itself would be like, which was both progressively exciting and excruciating, as the days rolled by.

Swamy was brought back to the present moment by a little bit of commotion within the viri. One of the Guru Swamys (referred to as GM from now on, for easy reference), a revered SabarimalA veteran of several decades, has just arrived, after having darshan of the Lord. Even before he rested after the long day out in the blazing sun, he was seen enquiring about the other Guru Swamy of the group (referred to as GJ from now on, for easy reference), who hasnt yet made it to the viri. He was also in the company of two more elderly veterans, which made the situation a bit worrisome, considering their physical wellbeing. So, it was time to find why was he delayed and where he was now.

Like any Guru Swamy who takes special care of the Kanni Swamys (first timers or rookies in the group), GM took Swamy along in his search of GJ, in the company of Swamy’s yAtrA Guru (leader of the smaller team of yAtris that Swamy was part of). Though they didnt succeed in locating GJ, Swamy ended up seeing the procession of MALigappuram^ DEvi, who was headed towards the Lords shrine to seek his hand in marriage, and also the spectacular procession of the AlanguLam** group, whose historic significance goes all the way back to when Lord AyyappA waged war against UdhayaNan, to reconstruct and restore the glory of the magnificent temple of Dharma SAsthA at Sabaripeetam. Though the 18 Steps can be climbed only once, and only by those yAtris with Irumudi, Swamy wished to at least see and bow down to it once more. That wish too was granted by GM, during the search for GJ. After returning to the viri, they found GJ seated there, obviously exhausted and not too thrilled at being left behind, though the graceful Lord ensured he too had his darshan by then.

As Swamy sat there wondering what’s next, his sexagenarian companion (a very busy wiry thin man, who was always on the move, defying his advanced age, pretty much always helping someone or other – especially the rookies, without expecting anything in return – a perfect portrait of Karma YOgi) transpired out of nowhere and offered to take him to the place of annadhAnam (good quality food offered free to all yAtris, all through the day, until the closure of the shrine at the conclusion of the mandalam) and then for another darshan of the Lord.

As the sun continued on his daily trip from east to west, the Lord would continue to shower his Grace on Swamy, with one enchanting darshan after another – 4 in all by the end of the day, each different from the previous one, and 5 in total before the descent began the next day. What more could Swamy – a staunch devotee of AdiYOgi Lord ShivA, not unlike any seeker on the yOgic path – ask for, as the number of darshans he had perfectly aligned with the PanchAkshara mUla mantrA of his blissed out Lord, the magnificent Lord of the Cosmic Dance, the first yOgi or AdiYOgi and first Guru or Adi Guru in the form of DakshiNAmurthy, the only PurushA and the father of all beings in creation, including Lord Sabarigireesan.

Hara Hara MahAdEvA!

*Pancha BhUta SthalAs are five significant shrines of Lord ShivA (& Devi Shakthi, of course), specifically consecrated to enhance (or moderate – depending on the yAtris disposition) that particular BhUtAs (elements – Agni / Fire, Jal or Appu / Water, VAyu / Air or Wind, Prithvi / Land or Earth and AkAsh / Space) attribute. By performing specific rituals / processes at each SthalA, one can observe / experience changes, both internally and externally. The sthalAs / temples are as follows:

VAyu sthalam (wind) ~ SriKALahasthi (KALathinhAdhar or KALahasthEswarar and GnAnaprasUnAmbikai amman), which is also known for RAhu-KEthu dOsha nivAraNam (relief) and the place where hunter-saint KaNNappar received the Lord’s Grace through his raw expression of pure bakthi (devotion). 

Prithvi sthalam (earth) ~ KAnchipuram (EkAmbaranhAdhar or EkAmbarEswarar and KAmAkshi amman, who is worshipped in a separate shrine), popularly known as the temple city that literally overflows with hundreds of temples.

Agni sthalam (fire) ~ ThiruvaNNAmalai (ANNAmalaiyAr and UNNAmulai amman). Also popular as the place from where BhagavAn RamaNa Maharishi showered his grace for many decades, after his self-realisation, and guided scores of seekers thru the path of GnAna yOgA.

AkAsha sthalam (space) ~ Chidhambaram (SabApathy or NatarAjar and SivagAmi or SivakAmasundari amman). This is also one of the Nadana Sabhais (courts or halls of dance) of the dancing Lord, known as Ponnambalam or Golden SabhAi. Also considered the spiritual center of the universe, where the Lord eternally performs the cosmic dance of Anandha ThANdavA (dance of bliss).

Jala or Appu sthalam ~ ThiruvAnaikkAval (JambhukEswarar and AkhilANdEswari amman), near Srirangam, where the popular Dhivya DEsam of Lord MahAvishNu is also located. There is also a shrine for Sadhguru Sri BrahmA (Sadhguru in his previous birth), where he was in SamAdhi, buried in the earth, for a mandalam. Swamy’s small group of yAtris, led by his UpaGuru, were fortunate to conclude their Pancha BhUta Sthala yAtrA in Sadhguru’s shrine.  

^When UdhayaNan attacked the Lord while he was in meditation, MALigappuram DEvi, who was held captive by him, is said to have given her own life by taking the blow of the weapon . She wished to be married to him, but as a brahmachAri and yOgi, the Lord politely declined but assured her that he would indeed marry her, in the year when no new yAtri (Kanni Swamy) visits his shrine. Nurturing that hope, she visits the Lord’s shrine in an impressive procession (used to be on elephants, with regal decorations) every year, but she would eventually return to her abode, sadly disappointed, upon seeing the thousands of sarams / arrows placed at Sanguththi, by Kanni Swamys like Swamy, which means she wont be able to marry the Lord this year too.

**Kochu Kadutha Swamy of the AmbalappuzhA yOgam band of warriors is the one who finally slayed UdhayaNan, as Lord Ayyappan has already sat in deep meditation. Along with AmbalappuzhA yOgam, PandaLa yOgam led by Villan & Mallan and AlangAd yOgam led by VAvar formed Lord Ayyappan’s formidable army,  which earned them the special rights in SabarimalA worship. While PandaLa yOgam preserves the Lord’s ThiruvAbharaNam (ceremonial clothing, jewellery) & brings it to the shrine on the day of Makara JyOthi, AlangAd yOgam got the right to perform PEttai ThuLLal at Erumeli (a stone’s throw away from VAvar Swamy’s mosque shrine & also the right to ascend the sacred 18 steps, without the Irumudi, which is mandatory for everyone else.

^^UpaGuru is like the VP of a nation or Vice Captain of a team, in the spiritual space, a Guide with immense knowledge & Mentor with extensive experience, who is readily available – and approachable, needless to say – for a seeker who has a Guru but needs ongoing guidance and direction, for which s/he couldn’t reach out to her/is Guru for various practical reasons.

18 Steps to Emancipation! ~ Swamy’s first SabarimalA yAtrA experience (Jan 2017)

Step 1 ~ End or Beginning!

The seemingly never ending march – one delicate step at a time – on the concrete pavement, came to an abrupt end in front of the 18 steep steps, adorned in glowing Gold. Looking at the fellow yAtris, Swamy also broke the coconut on his hand by throwing it against the black granite wall, beside the steps. The wiry thin sexagenarian veteran who was beside him signaled that it’s time to climb the steps. As Swamy bowed before and touched the first step with reverence, the body shook involuntarily and joy drops (aka tears of joy) started flowing. The journey to SabarimalA – Swamy’s first in his 46 years of existence in this lifetime – was about to conclude, with a few more steps, which still appeared incredulous. It’s over. Done. With the same surgically repaired knee that ascended KailAsh, Velliangiri (KailAsh of the South) and circumambulated the holy hill of ThiruvaNNAmalai. Hard to believe but absolutely certain.

Swamy climbed the 18 steps in a daze and was ushered towards the Lord, who as AbhishEgapriyan (one who loves being bathed or showered with various sacred offerings, such as Ghee, rose water, sandal, viboothi, flowers, etc), was showering his Grace nonstop during the Mandalam (40-42 days) period, on the millions of devotees from all over the world, who throng his hill shrine, after adhering to a strict vratham (sAdhanA that’s unique for the Lord) and climbing a long winding, strenuous forest route, up and down 4 different hills, to get a glimpse of the Lord for a few fleeting moments. Year after year.

As Swamy stood in front of Lord Dharma SAsthA (aka AyyappA / MaNikaNdA), there was no sense of elation. Nor was there any sense of accomplishment. The mind simply went blank and it was as if he stood in an empty void, facing the magnificent one, sitting in the unique HarivarAsanam (apparently one of the toughest AsanAs in Hatha Yoga), showing the Abhaya hasthA (one of the blessing mudrAs known as Chin MudrA) on his right arm and pointing to his lotus feet with his left (indicating surrender of the individual self / personality / identity / ego). No prayers came forth. No chants either. And in that fleeting moment, before being pushed by the police personnel (whose incredible effort ensures every single yAtri gets the darshan of the Lord without fail), Swamy noticed something different.


The Lord of the SabarimalA (literally, hill of Sabari), who is always seen as a child / teenager in pretty much all the pictures, appeared to Swamy as an elder, that too with a beard! Thinking that it must be an illusion caused by the fatigue induced by the strenuous climb up the hills, Swamy tightly closed and opened his eyes and looked at the Lord again. No, it wasn’t an illusion. He indeed had a beard. At least that’s how he was offering darshan to Swamy in that moment. He would eventually know about that form a few hours later.


With his sexagenarian partner showing the way with ease, Swamy simply went through the motion of circumambulating the few smaller shrines near or around the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Hariharasudhan (son of Hari aka MahAVishNu and HarA aka Lord ShivA) and descended to the resting place known as Viri. Upon seeing his yAtrA Guru there (another veteran of several decades, who was the leader of a smaller group of 7 or 8 yAtris that Swamy trekked with, which was one of the 5 or 6 groups that made the yAtrA together), he bowed & touched his feet, hugged him and cried uncontrollably. Collecting himself within a few moments, he sat on the wooden platform there and the mind that has just come out of the void, started w(p)ondering if this was the “End or Beginning!

The senseless noisy silly celebrations of yet another new year has started all over the planet. Millions will get drunk mindlessly, shake their body shamelessly to non-stop cacophony, shovel plates of atrociously priced food into their bowels & keep on wishing many more millions pointlessly.

Tomorrow morning the Sun will rise without a reminder, just like it did today & billions of days before, to keep Life going on this planet. Flowers will bloom; trees will sway & offer shade; birds will chirp & flap their wings; ants will crawl in a disciplined line to gather food; strays will roam the streets looking for food; cows will wait patiently near medians for speeding idiots to race past them; ceaseless waves of the ocean will continue to kiss the shore; prayers will be offered at temples, churches, mosques, gurudwaras & other places of worship; RaGa’s earthquake will not bother to disturb the Richter scale; neighbour will double the chance of you getting stricken with cancer by blowing second hand smoke from his balcony nonchalantly; over half of the Divided States of America will pray for armageddon to happen before Jan 20; AIADMK white brigade will pride themselves on being herded by a brand new mini amma; Stalin will continue to wait for his nanogenarian father to hand over the DMK baton; Akhilesh Yadav will continue to marvel at his incredulous father’s irrational attachment to his uncle; selective secularists will continue to wait for the next opportunity to pounce on NaMo worshippers, while sipping their wine or chai in british era clubs; black money hoarders will offer expensive gifts to bankers to convert their stash beyond the legal deadline that has already passed; Google will have another enchanting doodle; ACT fibernet will continue to be dead, almost a month after Vardah; TV channels will continuously broadcast death, despair & destruction 24×7; none of the Hollywood copycats & wannabes here will make a single decent movie that a global audience can watch & cheer, yet our movie makers who think too highly of their limited skills will wonder why they still couldn’t get an Oscar; all sports other than cricket will continue to starve for sponsorship; gyms & slimming clubs will gleefully sign annual contracts, knowing fully we’ll they don’t have to sweat it out after a few days; rich spoilt brats will drive their ultra-expensive imported cars in drunken stupor & kill a few platform dwellers, and walk away unscathed; Urjit Patel will conjure up his umpteenth DeMo rule, to amend the one announced yesterday; NaMo will wake up at 4am, do yOgA & head for another day at work to make this once-great nation great again; invariably all the hotels – especially the ones with a bar, Ola, Uber & the like will relish their most profitable day of the year, and will eagerly await the next such silly celebration day.  

You’ll wake up either a bad hangover or aching hips & knees or upset stomach or all of them & yell at someone for the misery you’ve created yourself. And signal the glorious start of yet another year of your wretched existence, which isn’t going to be any different from the previous one. 

Yet, you’ll expect everyone to wish you a “Very happy, healthy,… blah.. blah.. blah.. New Year” on all the social media apps & over phone, if not in person, and will respond to only those who wish you & make a note of those who don’t, adding that wrath to your already dump yard like karmA pile.

Bejan Dharuvala, Peter Vidal, Vamanan Namboodiri, AMR & Shelvee will assure you that at least 50% of your new year will be wonderful, which is exactly what they predicted for every new year, for everyone who cares to read their prediction. 

Swamy will once again re share his previous blogs like “Wish you Will” on this topic to remind you of the utter pointlessness of this abject stupidity & not respond to anyone’s wishes, which will continue to pour unabated from all & sundry anyway. Of course, not many will bother to read those blogs, again. 

As far as Swamy is concerned, there are only two days worth even thinking about – the day the Sun fails to show up in the morning & the one when it forgets to leave in the evening. In case of the former, we’ll all perish by freezing in a new ice age & in the latter we’ll probably burn & still perish.

Either way, there won’t be a planet anymore that inhabits a species that gloats so much about its extra sense over all other beings & still manage to screw up the only planet they’ve got to exist. As if their miraculously continuing existence itself, even for one more day, isn’t a celebration, they’ll hilariously – and very noisily – continue to celebrate some silly day or anniversary, pretty much every other day of the year. Every year. 

Celebrate like automatons trapped in The Matrix, without pausing to ponder even for a moment, if they’ve actually changed anything within themselves, in all these years, each of which offered at least 365 brand new days to ignite some change & appreciate the magnificence of creation all around in myriad forms, sizes & hues. And take at least a few baby steps to know the purpose of Life.

Celebrate yet another Noisy, Egocentric, Weary, Yappy, Eco-unfriendly, Arrogant, Ridiculous Copy New Year. BAUHumbug!

B’I’nary ‘i’nsight!

The single letter word I pretty much summarises why humans are such a screwed up species.

Always written in capitals, anywhere in a sentence, it symbolises the every rising ego, by standing tall, like a sore thumb.

That’s why, it’s so hard to contemplate the simplest – and needless to say very elegant and exceptionally eloquent – essential question thay may lead one to eternal wisdom, offered by the Sage of AruNAchalA BhagavAn RamaNa Maharishi, “Who am I?”

It’s so hard to get past one’s simple name, when one asks the question him/erself isn’t it!

Equally intriguing is it’s nondescript non-capital form “i”, which can come to the rescue of the increasingly frustrated ones who struggle to get over its towering capital big brother. Since the much humbler “i” is probably the solution to all the misery caused by the ignorant arrogance of it’s irritable big brother, let’s look at it in a bit more detail.

Unlike the adamant tall “I”, the humbler “i” is actually made of two parts, which may even be considered as the two states of binary “1” & “0”, which has been interpreted in a million different ways in different cultures such as “Shakthi” & “ShivA”, “Yang” & “Yin”, “On” & “Off”, “Ecstasy” & “Stillness”, “PrAkrithi” & “PurushA”, “Individual Self” & “Supreme Self”, “Pashu” & “Pathi”, “Everything” & “Nothing”, “AgnAna” & “GnAna”, “Thing” & “No-Thing”, “PingalA” & “IdA”, “Thought” & “Silence”, “AvidhyA” & “VidhyA”, “Intellect” & “Intelligence”, “MAyA” & “Reality”, “Manifest” & “Unmanifest”, “Oneness” & “Allness”, “Exclusion” & “Inclusion”, “Incomplete” & “Complete”, “Partial” & “Whole”, “Knowledge” & “Knowing”, “Darkness” & “Light”, and so on and on and on.

Going from the never ending quest of being the “1” in everything one does for mere survival, to the state of acceptance that all that one does is utterly pointless unless one realises the true purpose of Life, i.e. becoming the “0”, is the journey called Life. Since realising this Truth is the purpose – not a Goal, which is what hilarious humans are driven to, in anything & everything – the emphasis in Spirituality is always on the journey and not the destination, because there isn’t any.

And the possibility for that realisation opens up only when the head full if “I”, i.e. the “0” on top of the “1” is chopped off and rolls away, so that this “1” being realises that it isn’t an individual being at all – despite all the name, fame, religion, caste, social status, wealth, power, etc.  but just another being in the vast myriad creation, all of which is a part of the whole of “0”.

Time to pick up the gnAna axe and swing your way up above the mighty looking ignorant “I” mountain, with the newly gained Binary “i”nsight as your climbing guide, and proceed towards the self-realisation summit, eh!

Sacred Secularism!

This enchanting tale about Gautama the Buddha & one of his wonderful disciples was shared by my Master Sadhguru (shared as received).

“Right now, during monsoon, the northern and eastern part of the Indian subcontinent is receiving heavy rains. In a season like this, Gautama the Buddha, who was otherwise continuously travelling with a large group of his disciplines, made a rule that in these two and a half months, the monks could stay in one place. Generally, the rule for the sanyasis or monks who were with him was to never stay in any place for more than two days. But during the rainy season, walking through the jungles would have been treacherous, and many would have lost their lives. Therefore, this was a time when they stayed in a larger town and spread across many homes.

During the day, the monks went out for alms. Ananda Tirtha, Gautama’s elder cousin, encountered a courtesan. She gave him alms, looked at him, a tall and handsome young man, and said, “I heard monks are looking for shelter. Why don’t you come and stay in my house?” Ananda Tirtha said, “I must ask the Buddha as to where I should stay.” She became really taunting, “Oh, you want to ask your Guru? Go and ask him. Let’s see what he says.”

Ananda went back to Gautama and put what he had collected at his feet. Everyone was supposed to find food and shelter wherever they go. So Ananda asked, “This lady is inviting me. Can I stay there?” Gautama said, “If she is inviting you, you must go and stay there.” Upon hearing that, the townspeople who were around were up in arms. They said, “What? A monk is going to stay at a prostitute’s home? This is it! This spiritual process has become corrupt.” Gautama looked at them and said, “Why are you so worried? The lady is inviting him. Let him stay there. What is the problem?”There are better highs than getting drunk. There are better highs than doing drugs.People started to get up. He said, “Wait. I am on this path because I see this is the most precious and powerful way to live. Now you are telling me her ways are more powerful than mine? If that was the truth, I should go and join her. As a true seeker, that is how it should be – if you find something much higher, you should go for that.” People were in high dungeon, and of course, many left.

Ananda went and stayed with her. Because of the rains, it got cold. He was only wearing a thin robe, so she gave him a nice silk wrap. He covered himself with it. When people saw this, they took it as evidence that he was going astray. She cooked nice food for him. He ate. In the evening, she danced for him. He sat watching with utmost attention. When people heard the music, they thought he had fallen. Time passed. When the rains stopped and it was time to move on, Ananda came to Gautama with a female monk!!!

This is the power of being on the path of truth. There is an innate longing in human beings to seek truth. They just need to be given an opportunity.

The rainy season practice mentioned in the aforesaid tale is still actively observed by monks of many mutts (Ashram) too, as ChAturmAsya vrata.😌

Chatur (Sanskrit) means 4 (doesn’t “Chatur bhuje chandra kalA vadamse” ring a bell!🔔). It’s a 4-month period, during monsoon, when many popular festivals are also celebrated. 🤗 This period is considered auspicious for performing DAna (offering / giving away to others), VratA (austerities including daily rituals & food), JapA (chanting MantrAs) & HomA (ritual havan or fire process for purification & specific purposes). 😇

There are a few interesting stories (what’s our magnificent culture without them 😏) about ChAturmAsya vratA that one can Google & enjoy. 👌

KAnchi MahAPeriyavA Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi aka ParamAchAryA (literally – Great Guru / Teacher) made its importance known to many by observing it in different places every year & disciples, devotees & seekers (considered the reincarnation of the great sage Adi SankarA, MahAPeriyavA is a realized Master who is physically no more but continue to be a living reality for many disciples) were delighted because it’s like having God incarnate come & stay in (near, to be precise) your place for an extended period of time rather than you going to their place for darshan. 🙌

Incidentally, Gautama, having been a Prince before becoming the Buddha (the enlightened one), would’ve not only known about this ancient practice, but would’ve also patronised SAdhus, monks & roving mendicants during the ChAturmAsya.☝ It’s but natural for him to follow it, albeit sans the rituals (which he consciously excluded in his path Damma PadA, so that any seeker, including those without any knowledge of the many rituals, can still seek to attain Mukti), which is the backdrop of the aforesaid story.👍

Considering every 3rd person encountered on the road these days is a selective secularist, soon there’ll certainly be a secular spin to the Buddha’s tale as well, as the necessary pieces to put together a puzzle are all readily there (& a bunch of mic wielding maniacal reporters chasing TRP are always around to share their silly sickular views on prime time TV as well). 🙈

Sadhguru, a living realized Master, has shared the tale of Gautama the Buddha,  one of the most popular realized Masters of all time, to shine the light on the power of spirituality, fueled by purity of purpose.🙌

Our ancient culture is abound with such enchanting tales from time immemorial, to ensure the safe passage of Truth thru time, for all future generations. In this tale, the subtly hidden message is about the auspicious nature of the ChAturmAsya period & the austerities to be observed / performed during that time, by all seekers.🌼

Since Mukti or ultimate liberation (from the cycle of birth & death) was considered the only purpose of being born as a human being in this awe-inspiring culture, such minutely detailed practices are given without any reference to religion, caste, status, gender & any such divisive criteria, which makes this ancient culture truly secular, i.e. Sacred Secularism. 😌

But the selective secularist pseudo intellectual elites, love to only use such tales to polish their silly perspectives on history. No sir / ma’am, no pre-historic or purAnic or vedic period exists in their human evolution timeline, as they continue to simply brush aside anything not written or spoken about by a western – preferably left-leaning – or western-educated scholar. BAUHumbug.. 🐙 So much for the secular spin 😄- that too in the name of realized Masters 👼- on our meaningful, purposeful & powerful ancient culture! 🙌 Shambho 🙏
